THE LANDLORDS AND THE CROFTERS.
A troopship with 2000 marines was ordered to proceed on November 10th from Portsmouth to the Isle of Skye, to assist the police in restoring order among the crofters. There is no abatement of the excited feeling in Skye, and crofters from the neighborhood of the ■ islands are flocking there to assist their brethren in maintaining their claims. Pally 2500 crofters met a detachment of the police on their arrival on November llth, and conducted them to Big There they demanded the object of their coming, and, no satisfactory answer being given, the islanders conducted them back to their landing place and requested them to leave their shores. A despatch of the 16th sayt news has been received that the crofters have resolved to suhnp't uncon? ditionally, One of the events of the week ending 22nd November was the debate in the Mouse of Commons on the subject. Sir William Harcourt, on behalf of the crofters, denounced hot l * emigration and eviction, and so general was the feeling in their favor that the Tories spoke with moderation. Several Conservative landlords have agreed to stay their demands, and a resolution asking for prompt legislation for the crcfters was carried unanimously. Leading farmers at the same time have called fora wholesale fedugtiqq of rents.
