A severe shook of earthquake, accompanied with a terrific explosion and report, occurred on the night of November 14th, at Olitterscoe, Chester, 25 miles from Manchester. The shock threw down horses in the streets, and caused gpaat consternation and excitement among the inhabitants.

A cablegram from London of the 9th says a sensation has been caused by a rumor that the Earl of Durham, the gieat landowner, politician, and bearer of an illustrious name, is about to bring an action for a judicial separation from his wife. The cause assigned is the discovery that the unhappy lady is mentally unsound. Opinions differ as to the rights or wrongs of the business. Some persons blame the husband, whilst others declare that he was wilfully deceived by his wife's relatives.

Michael Davitt made a speech at Coalbridge, Glasgow, on November 11th, in which he predicted great danger for England when, the passage of the Franchise Bill having augmented the Irish party in Parliament, the Government refuses to allow Home Rule in Ireland. Davitt also denied the statement that he urged the Skye crofters to armed assistance. He said they had right on their side, and would ultimately succeed. Patrick Fitzgerald, the Fenian, arrested in London last April on a charge of treason-felony, was acquitted in Dublin on the 11th. Owing to his acquittal the Crown has abandoned the Tubber-Curry cases, and all the prisoners were released, They were received by their friends with great rejoicings. The Coporation of the City of Limerick on the 12th, by an overwhelming majority, refused to pay any attention to several writs for extra police tax. They also passed resolutions denouncing Government for re-appointing George Bolton as Crown Solicitor. United Ireland says : " It is possible a general fiscal resolution will recommend itself as the simplest and most effective way of compelling the Government to yield to Irish demands." A serious riot occurred at the mining village of Coal Island, in the suburbs of Dungannon, County Tyrone, on November 16th. While being far from good Catholics, the colliers are bitter haters of Protestants, and to show their feelings they attacked the church and drove the Protestant worshippers out, and assaul'ed with clubs and stones every Protestant they could find, and held possession of the village for two hours. They were dispersed by a police force from Dungannon. Michael Davitt, Henry George, Miss Helena Taylor, <ind several members of Parliament attended a large Land Restoration League Meeting at St. James' Hull, London, on November 18th. There was a good deal of enthusiasm during the discussion over the proposition that land inalienably belonged to the people. The steamer Australia was detained two days beyond her advertised time of sailing, by the non-arrival of the English mail. Advices reached Boston on Nov. 17th that the American ship Amilunae was lying at Saratoga bound for Australia. Captain Freeman and the first officer were reported dead from chelera, and a new commander will be sent from Boston to take her to her destination. Captain Bedford Pim, 8.N., has been interviewed in New York on his return from Panama, and gives it as his opinion that DeLesseps' canals as now being constructed at the latter place, is impracticable. Henry George, the land agitator, has arrived in London. He went from New York at the invitation of the Scottish Land Restoration League, and his public lectures will deal particularly with the crofters' question.
