THE PROPOSED EAST AND WEST COAST RAILWAY.

The promoters of the West Coast Railway have appointed Messrs C. C. Bowen, W. Chrystall, A. H. Dobson, C. E. Blakiston, J. T. Ford, H. AUm Scott, T. 0. Kelsey, T. S. Weston, G. Hart, J. T. Matson and E. W. Parker a Committee to endeavor to arrange tor the construction of lines by coming to terms with the Government and then inducing London capitalists to take up the contract. The Committee have prepared a draft contract between the promoters and the Government, and submitted it to the SolicitorGeneral, who informed them he would like fuller information en certain points. The Committee have appointed Mr H. A. Scott to go to Wellington to interview him. Mr Scott is also to see Mr Fell, of Nelson, and obtain hia views with regard to the Nelson and West Coa3t Railway. After a consultation with the Christchurch Chamber of Commerce the Committee decided to adopt the Arthur's Pass route in preference to that via Cannibal Gorge, and to specify the same in the contract with the Government. In compliance with the request of the Committee, the Government have agreed to withdraw from sales all land available as concessions along both routes, pending the signing of a contract. The Government will also furuish the Committee, at the lalter's expense, with trucings of plans and sections of the line from Springstield to Brunnerton. At a full meeting of the Committee on Thursday afternoon it was decided that Mr H. Scoitand Mr A. 11. Dobson should procaed to England to dispose of the contract in London, either by arrangement with a syndicate or otherwise. The following have been appointed to sign the contract with the Government : —W. Chrystall, T. S. Weston, J. T. Matson, J. T. Ford, and G. Hart. The Committee have decided to canvass Canterbury and Westland in order to raise the funds required to put the contract on the London market.
