GERALDINE TOWN BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Wednesday evening in the Board’s office. Present — Messrs R. H. Pearpoint (Chairman), R. Taylor, J. Huffey, T. Farrell, W. S. Maslin, N. Dunlop, and J. Mundell. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Outward correspondence was read as follows : To Messrs B. Gibson, W. S. Maslin, and A. Sherratt, in reply to their applications for kerbing to be done on the footpaths in front of their properties, stating that the work would be done, the applicants to pay half the cost. To Mr R. Morrison, asking him to trim the fence in front of his property. To Mr A. Kelman, as owner of the property occupied by Mr O. Trengrove, asking him to trim the fence growing over the footpath. To Mr W. Stevens, asking him to clear the creek running through the property owned by him of all obstructions, or the work would be done by the Beard at his expense. To Mr W. C. Andrews, forwarding a copy of the resolution passed at last, meeting of the Board in reference to his application for salary. STREET KERBING. The Chairman said that perhaps stone kerbing would be put down cheaper than concrete, and some of the members thought it could be done cheaper. Mr Taylor proposed —“ That alternative tenders be called for stone and concrete kerbing, tenders to be sent in by next meeting.” This was seconded by Mr Huffey"and carried, the strength of the concrete to be at the rate of one in seven. CEMETERY ROAD. The Works Committee reported that the only way they could see to improve the Cemetery Road was to plough it up and re-form it: form a, footpath as far as I the bridge, and put a footbridge over the creek.

Mr Taylor thought it was not necessary to disturb tho road, as the traffic over it did not warrant the amount it would cost to re-form it.

Mr Mnndell said that to fill in the ditch alongside the Cemetery fence and from footpath would make a unsightly job, as it would have to be raised to such a height as to make it on a level with the road.

Mr Huffay proposed, Mr Farrell seconded, and it was carried—“ That the work be carried out in accordance with the Work’s Committee’s report, and tenders be in by next meeting.” Mr Maslin supported the motion, not because be thought the road itself wanted improving, but because it would “give a much-needed footway to the Cemetery. HAWKERS’ LICENSES. The Chairman said it was necessary that steps should be taken to see that persons living without, but trading within, the Town District as hawkers should be compelled to take out licenses. Mr Taylor proposed, Mr Farrell seconded, and it was carried—“ That the Clerk be instructed to bring forward a list of those persons carrying ou the business of hawkers in the Town District.” INTERVIEW. Mr J. Ward had an interview with the Board, and asked them to reconsider their decision to fine him for not having completed his contract in specified time. After he had withdrawn, Mr Maslin proposed, Mr Mundell seconded, and it was carried— “ That the resolution passed at last meeting that a penalty ef £1 a week for four weeks be enforced, against Mr Ward for the non completion of contract in specified time be rescinded.” THE board’s.RESERVES. In reply to Mr Maslin, the _ Clerk stated that no reply had been received in reference to the reserves applied for. Resolved—“ That the Clerk be instructed to write to the member for the district, Mr W. Rolleston, and to the Hon. the Colonial Secretary, in reference to the reserves. ” OVERSEER’S REPORT. The Overseer's report on the works in progress showed that they were going on satisfactorily. MISCELLANEOUS, The Works’ Committee reported having accepted Thos. Fyfe’s tender of £3 17s 6d for an office book-case. The Chairman stated that W. Sherratt had been engaged to impound stray cattle and horses in the Town District, and that he was to receive half the fines. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £74 Os 6d were passed for payment, and the Board then adjourned. TEMUKA TOWN BOARD. The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held last Wednesday evening, in the Town Board office. Present Messrs Gray (Chairman), Brown, Blyth, Mason and Quiun. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. INTERVIEW, Mr Job Brown waited upon the Board with respect to crossings to his granary, and stated that in Tnnaru in several places they got permission from the Council to back up to their stores, and instanced Mr Cornish’s store as one of these places.— After a long discussion it was resolved—- “ That the Chairman see the Town Cleric, Timaru, to ascertain whether permission had been given in Timaru as stated by Mr Brown; and, if bethink it necessary, call a special meeting of the Board to consider the question.” CORRESPONDENCE. From the Rev. T. A, Hamilton, in reference to a nuisance in Vine street. — The C!erk was instructed to acknowledge the receipt of the letter, and call Mr Hamilton’s attention to By-la nr 2, clause 6, under which no owner or occupier of a house shall allow the discharge of any offensive matter on any street or public place. From the Town Clerk, Timaru, stating that the pan system was enforced by a resolution. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The Overseer reported that one man had been employed in clearing waterchannels and stubbing grass alongside of footpaths from the Post Office corner to Hooper's blacksmith shop, and on the Main South road from Quinn’s to Cass street ;also on the Wallingford Hotel side of Commerce street, and carting in clay and shingle over the pipes laid down in Ewen’s road, leading to Whitehead’s brickyard. The breaking of stones along the main road would be finished in a few days, and all loose stones not likelj to be imbedded Iwould be carted off. The clearing of Vine street drain would be Started next week. Thera was a balance of £l2 12s Id in the Bank. Davis and Roddick had not complied with the conditions of their leases of section as regards fencing them, but Davis iiad got the posts and rails on the ground, and intended to start in a week's time. The Clerk was instructed to arrange for an overdraft with the Bank. It was resolved—“ That all rates not paid before the end of December be sued for without farther notice.” The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Roddick, informing him that unless he fences the reserves let to him within seven days they will be re-let, and tenders invited, to be in by 13th December, addressed to the Chairman. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £23 19s 3d were passed for payment. INSPECTOR OE NUISANCES’ REPORT. _ The Inspector of Nuisances submitted a list of persons who complied with the pan system, the number being about 50. There were many who had pans and emptied them, and others had cess-pools or pits. The question was t whether people should be allowed to empty the pans themselves? Mr Hayhurst| had made arrangements to carry a drain from the Crown Hole! to the junction opposite the Road Board Office. With tespect to 'Taylor’s drain, Mr Taylor was willing to lake up the pipes, but the adjoining tenant, James Marshall, would not allow him to cross his section. Mr Pilbrow, as Mr JELiyhurst’s agent, thought he might arrange with Mr Marshall about the matter. The Board then adjourned.
