The Appeal Court at Wellington has adjourned, having finished all the cases set down for hearing. The last case on the list was that of Douslin v. Brownlee (Marlborough), and it was dismissed. The Hon. Mr Stout left Wellington for the south yesterday afternoon. A cottage at North East Valley, Dunedin, owned and occupied by a man named John Witherman, was burnt down yesterday morning. The South British Company is interested to the extent of £l2O. The youngest son of Mr James Allan of Hope Hill farm, Taieri (Otago), went rabbit shooting on Saturday, and on returning home attempted to fire off a charge remaining in his gun. The weapon missed fire twice, and Allan then sat down intending to extract, the charge, holding the gun with the muzzle towards him in order to do so. Whilst in this position the cartridge exploded and he received the charge in the left cheek, the bone being broken and the ear carried away.

The Gtrtnin sloop of war Albatross arrived at Auckland from Samoa yesterday, and will probably remain a month. The Supreme Court at Napier opened yesterday. Seventeen cases are set down for hearing, among them being charges of attempted murder, attempted suicide, houoebreaking, larceny, forgery , and attempted injury to a horse. Mrs Frank Wadsworth, known as the heroine of the Crozets, died at Wellington on Saturday, aged 58. She was the only female saved from the wreck of the Strath more, on the Crozete some years ago, and participated in all the sufferings and hardships of the survivors until rescued.
The Public Works Department, Dunedin, is about to call for tenders for permanent way and station buildings on the Waihemo branch line. The section will complete the line to Jordan's from the junction of Macraes with the Shag Valley road. It is also intended to let by tender the unfinished uection of the Hindoo contract.
