A man named John Mehan attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the harbor at Auckland on Saturday, when he was rescued by a waterman. He had been drinking heavily, and said he was tired of Ins life.

His Excellency the Governor will attend the Dunedin Show.

Dr Hughes, the Freethonght lecturer, has engaged the Auckland Opera House on Sunday evenings for the next six months.

A man named Richard Claridge has been found dead near his homo at Napier with a wound in his forehead. The deceased was found lying on the road. The police have been communicated with, as the circumstances surrounding the case point to foul play. Robert Roskill, railway stationmaster at Normanby, has been arrested for embezzlement.

John Rose, a lad of sixteen, and whose exploits with a gun were described last week, was brought up on remand at Blenheim on Monday. The doctors having declined to cerlify to his insanity, he was again remanded for seven days to see if dangerous symptoms developed themselves.

At an inquest on Monday on the body found in Lyttelton Harbor on Friday last, the body was identified as that of Thos McCleary, a laborer, who had lived in Christchurch, and who left homo ten days ago. His wife could not account for his having gone to Lyttelton. Sir Julius Vogel has accepted an invitation, given by the Mayor of Christchurch, to be present at a banquet in that city on his return from the Hot Lakes. A deputation of lately-dismissed men from the Addington Kailway Workshops waited on the Minister for Public Works on Monday, and complained that tfie wellknown rule respecting seniority of service had been broken in discharging them. The Hon. E. Richardson said that discharges bad to be made, and the officers of the department had made the best selection they could. The men were assured that if work became brisker they would be taken on in preference to others. The Oatnaru Caledonian Society are endeavoring to arrange for a band contest at their annual gathering. Government have just imported from the English Mint a quantity of new silver thieepenny pieces, and bronze penny and lirlfpenny pieces. Mr R. B. Martin, President of the Otago Benevolent Asylum, has received a communication from the Colonial Secretary’s office informing him that a sum will be set apart towards the coat of building a Home for Destitute Old Men. Plans of the building have to be submitted for approval, and progress payments will be made when the work is proceeded with. At Auckland, Arthur Dransfield w-as found dead in his bed on Tuesday morning. At the inquest a veidict of serous apoplexy was returned.

The election to represent the policyholders on the Government Insurance Board will take place early next month, and the necessary arrangements respecting the election are now being made. The following are the Government nominees for the State Insurance Board—G. Y. Shannon (ofJMessrs Thomas and Shannon), Nicholas Reid (of Messrs W. and G. Turnbull and Co.), J. H. Bethune (of J. H. Bethune and Co.). Captain Joss, of (he brigantine Bannockburn, cables to Auckland that the vessel was totally wrecked on one of the Bunker Gioup on the 3rd lust. All hands landed at Rockhampton on Tuesday morning. Two lads named William and Edward Small, aged respectively 12 and 14 years went to bathe in a gravel pit at Wheatstone, Ashbnrton, and were drowned. Their companions made great efforts to save them.
