' How do we know,' said Te Whiti "until we found your advice and medicines were good, that you had not besen sent by the Government to poison us—-as if we were not dying out fast enough.' Dr O'Carroll then pointed out to them the necessity for cleanliness. Te Whiti sprung up and said : 'lt is riirht what you say ; but listen : If I order my people to sweep clean the pah, they will not obey me. Cease your words. Bryce took my authority from me, I am but a common Maori ; I cannot give an order. We all see and know now your tmodwill towards us, as yon have worked wonders for us so far. Thank Ballance for us, but we still mistrust the Government. Have we not good • cause 1 J preached peace and they toon my land away.' Dr O'Carroll told Te Whiti that the Hon. Mr Ballance, on hearing that Te Whiti's people were so ill, had sent him to their relief at once, which showed that the Native Minister's heart was good towards them ; but they must not give trouble, or they might annoy him.
