At the ordinary meeting of the Council on Monday there were present Messrs J. Talbot"! (Chairman), W. Balfour, R. j Mackay, A. Sberratt, W. Moody.— A. letter was read frem the Public Works Department, granting in full an spp'ica- - tion for £92, under section 18 of the Road« and Bridges Conn!ruction Act, for repairing damage b}' floods to Opihi ■ Bid go. The Temuka and Gerald ine i Town Boards forwarded copies of by-laws. i —Mr E. H. Brewer wrote concerning Ibe supply of dog collars, and asked whether the Council would have D.'s put on this year, at at extra coat of 2d per collar. Mr Brewer was authorised to make the co'lara on the same terms as b- fore and he was authorised to have the D.'s pa» on. —Mr Compton, Rangifara Hotel, wrote >tating that the planking a' sou'h end of the Rangitata bridge was'becoming r t;en and one plank whs broken and a dangerous hole left. Ho bad wntien to tho Ashbnrton Couny Engineer hi'x weeks before, but had rece:ved no reply. They were willing to give £l5O towards the o si, but objected that the bridge proposed would be too narrow.—The tibraldine Road Board wrote drying aitehtion to the state of the t'sttic bri.lge •ver the Waihi at needing to be renewed. The Chaivni.in said he expected a similar M'er won d have been sent by the Temuka jjoard, concerning the Temuka Bridge, and the matter was left over for the new Council to deal with.—The Ashbiutou Council wrote asking the Council to co-operato with them in obtaining a reduction of a the sheep tax, and it V7as decided to write 'o the Aslinurton Council for information is to their action.—Mr Aspinail, solicits, Temuka, wrote on behalf of P Bannatyne, a person who had been employed on the Opihi bridge works from the Ist September to the 25th October, and had been unaole to obtain payment of his wages fiom Messrs Philp and Jones, they declining- to pay him because' he was working tor a snb-contrac f or named Smith. In a suit brought against them Bannatyne uas non-suited on that ground. The writer asked the Council to assist the man in getting his wages. As no consent had been given to the contractor to sub-let, it wag decided that Messrs Philp and Jones be asked to attend the next meeting of the Council to explain the matter. —Mr M ody suggested that it woulo be a good thing, in a long narrow bridge bke th;ft being put over the Opihi, io provide ooh or two recesses into which vehicles could retire on meeting others. Tie Chairman said several people had spoken to h-m about it, and he had cmferre l with the Engineer. Mr Meason was preparing an estimate, and said one could be provided cheaply at the junction of the old and new bridges—The Secretary stated thit in no case bad there been a contested election for the representation of a riding, and the new Council would be composed of—For the Levels Riding, Mensris W.
Moody and W. Balfour; for the Temuka Riding, Messrs J. Talbot and K. A. Barker ; for t\>e Geraldine Riding, Mr Li. H. Postlethwaite; an) for the Mount Peel Riding, Mr R. Mack y.
