Intelligence has been received that the Mabdi is gathering bis forces round Khartoum, and has summoned'General Gordon to surrender.

Information from Khartoum states that General’ Gordon had made a sortie, capturing a large quantity ofthe enemy's corn and privisions. Intelligence has been, , received from Khartoum, through a noted Arab sheikh who reports that at the end of September the greater portion of the garrison there were deserting, and that General Gordon, had embarked with two thousand soldiers and refuge e in steamers northward, but the rebels succeeded in sinking several of tha vessels, which completely barred the passage of 1 tha river to Barber. The only steamer that succeeded in passing upwards was that of wtib Colonel Stewart on board, and which was subsequently ‘wracked. General Gordon, with the rest of the flotilla, succeeded in retreating as far as Shsndy, where they Were all captured by tha rebels. Tbs information requires official confirmation.

In its issue to-day, the Daily News publishes telegrams from ill'correspondent in Soudan stating that « terrible battle bad taken place between General Gordon’s forces > and the followers of the Mahdi, the' latter numbering oyer 25,000 men, who,fought desperately for eight hours, suffering enormous losses and temporary reverse*, but continually returning to the field in increased numbers. Later. The Khedive has sent.a telegram to Her Majesty the Queen, conveying the intelligence that Kharton/n has t»l>n, and that General Gordon has he-n taken prisoner by the rebels. Latest. In the House of Lords Lo'd Granville took occasion to. deny ti>e report current that the Kheidiv- ha cabled to the Queen that Khartoum t>a ‘ fallen and General Gordon had bn. made prisoner. The report to that rtf . is generally disbelieved.
