GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. In the Council on Tuesday, The Wanganui Harbor Board and Hokitika Steam Tug Bills were read a third time and passed. The Government Life Assurance and Westland Education Sub-division Bills were read a second time. Several other Bills were advanced a stage and the Council adjourned. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. In the House on Tuesday, In reply to questions it was stated : That it would be best to see how the special settlement of the Highland crofters got on in the South Island before making another settlement in the North Island ; that steps were being taken to hold monthly sittings of the District Court in Waimate with Bankruptcy jurisdiction ; that steps were being taken to overtake the arrears in the issue of Crown Grants in the Canterbury Land District. Replying to Mr Rolleston as to what course the Government proposes to take with regard to the outstanding claims under the Forest Tree Planting Act, the Hon. Mr Ballanoe said it was proposed to adhere to the provisions of the Act as closely as possible. A large number of claims had been received.

Several other questions were also replied to. The Consolidated Stock Bill was considered in Committee (when several slight amendments were made) and was read a third time and passed. Major Atkinson intimated tha 1 ’ in face, of the large majority who voted for the Bill on its second reading he would not oppose it, but he affirmed that he felt as strongly as ever against the Bill. • The New Zealand Loan Bill also passed through its remaining stages and was passed. Several members spoke against the vote for immigration, but jt was not reduced.

On the motion for the committal of the Property Tax Bill, Major Atkinson said it would probably be more convenient if he reserved the remarks he intended to make on this Bill till the third reading of the Appropriation Bill, when he proposed to review the actions of the Government. The House went into Committee op the Bill, which was reported without amend-, ments, read a third time, and passed. The House then went into Committee of Supply, and passed a large nutphep of votes.
