The Temuka Leader. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1884. PUBLIC WORKS.
The virtue assumed by the Hon. Robert Stout a few evenings ago was very commendable. He said the Government would not allow some parts of the colony to get all the public expenditure whilst other parts went without any, and that it would be equally distributed everywhere. Just so. This was very good, but his colleague Mr Richardson said the very opposite a few evenings before. In reply to Mr Rolleston be said he could not recommend the Government to construct a sheep bridge in connection with the Rangitata railway bridge, but Government would probably assist the local bodies interested. He proposes to spend nearly £3,000,000 on public works next year, but it is too much to spend about £I2OO in Fouth Canterbury! And then the Premier has the impudence to say the money is to be equally divided amongst the various districts.
THE BANK SCHEME. The llon, Sir Julius Vogel is evidently no friend of a National Bank. We never thought he would bo, A professional loan agent and factotum of money-rings and monopolies such as he is could not be a friend of such an institution because then “ Othello's occupation would be gone.’’ If the Bank were once started there would be an end to Sir Julius’s services as a loan agent. A few evening ago, in reply to Mr Macandrew, he said to appoint a Royal Commission to inquire into the matter would do more harm than good, and that it would be necessary to send to England or India to get information on the subject. This is the substance of his reply as telegraphed by the Press Association and if it is correct it is just about as silly a one as could possibly be given. We shall look forward with interest to the full report in Hansard, and when that reaches us we intend to return to the subject.
