CRICKET.
GERALDINE C.C. V. TEMUKA C.C,
On Saturday last the opening of ihe cricketing season on the Geraldine oval was made the occasion of a match between the above teams. The day was line although somewhat cold. The pavilion was graced with the presence of several ladies. The pitch was in excellent order. The Temuka team was captained by Mr VV. H. Hargreaves and the Geraldine by Mr W, Moore, Dr Fish and Mr Thiuston acted as umpires. The toss, having been won by the visitors* they
elected to send their opponents to the wickets. W. H. Lodge and W. Hargreaves commenced to the bowling of G. Smith, at whose hands Lodge had to succumb after scoring 5. The first wicket fell for 15. R. H. Pearpoint took Lodge’s bat, but was not allowed to remain long at the wicket, a ball from Hayhurst sending him away with a duck’s egg, and W. Moore took his place, the second wicket falling for 15. Hargreaves soon after let drive a ball which was caught by'Hayes, and he left the wicket, to be succeeded by Fred. Fish, the third wicket falling for 22. Moore was eventually dislodged, his ball being caught by Wood, after making the top score of the innings, the fourth wicket falling for 43. G. Ward succeeded. After Fred. Fish had held his bat for some time a ball therefrom was caught by Qurr, and he went away—five wickets for 46. Frank Fish succeeded his brother. G. Ward was bowled out by Hayhurst, the sixth wicket falling for 54, and Slack went to the wicket. After holding his own for some time Frank Fish was dislodged, being caught by Qurr, the sixth wicket being down for 54. Taylor next went in but was soon ?ut out, the eighth wicket falling for 58. olhill succeeded. Slack’s wicket fell by a ball sent by Smith, the ninth wicket going for 58. The game was then left in the hands of Hughes and Polhill, but the latter was sent away by Hayhurst, Highes carrying his bat out, the total score being 58. The Temuka team next went in for their first innings, sending Brown and Gurr to the wickets. The latter was soon put aside by a ball from Fred. Fish without scoring—l wicket for 2. Heap succeeded, but also retired with a similar result—2 wickers for 2. G. Smith then took the bat, and shortly after Brown was run out, 3 wickets for 4. Hayhurst went in his place, and after a short struggle was caught and bowled by Fred Fish—4 wickets for 4. Smith went away after some good bowling by Pearpoint without adding to the score—s wickets for 6. Hargreaves and Wood were now at the wickets, but the former was soon caught by Hargreaves (two Hargreaves were playing, one on each side) by H. Smith. Wood retired through a ball from Pearpoint—7 wickets for 12. The remaining players, Hayes and McCaskill, each retired without scoring, and Haines carried out his bat. Total score, 13. Geraldine, after a short interval, went in for their second innings, resulting in a total score of 98, the first wicket falling for 6,2 for 9, 3 for 9, 4 for 26, 5 for 40, 6 for 57, 7 for 73, 8 for 89, 9 for 91, 10 for 98, Grand total for the two innings, 156. Temuka then went to the wickets, sending in Gurr and Brown. The result showed a total for 45, Gurr making the top score of 17. The first wicket fell for 0,2 for 1, 3 for 10, 4 for 11, 5 for 14, 6 for 33, 7 for 39, 8 for 41, 9 for 45. Grand total of the two innings, 68. The following are the scores : Geraldine—First Innings.
