Governor Cleveland, of New !i ork State, and a candidate for the Presidency, was Assaulted to-day at Albany, but escaped uninjured. His assailant was arrested.

Intelligence has been received from Tonquin that the Chinese recently attacked the French position at Tuyenguyen, but were repulsed with heavy loss. Cairo, Oct. 20.

Melbourne, Oct. 20,

An explosion has occurred at the Lithofracleur Company’s works near Footscray. The building was completely wrecked, and two workmen severely injured.

It has transpired that Mr Stout, Premier of New Zealand, telegraphed to Mr Service requesting to be supplied with further information regarding the proposed protest to the Imperial Government against the conclusion of a convention with Germany with regard to Pacific annexation.
