The body of the unfortunate man Kilver, drowned on the 11th at Hokitika, was discovered at 4.30 on Friday afternoon, a few yards from where he disappeared . Mr Jones, who for over 20 years has been foreman of works in Lyttelton gaol, died on Friday, aged 60. He was one of the , oldest gaol officials in the colony. On Thursday morning a single girl in service at that place gave birth to a child, and an hour after her accouchement was bundled out of the house, and, after some difficulty, quarters were found for her at the Old People’s Refuge. Both mother and child were scantily clad. A lad between four and five years of age, son of Mr Hampton, of Lauriston, met with nn accident on Thursday morning, and died on the following day from the injuries received. It appears (says the Press) that in the temporary absence of his mother he got near the fire, and his clothes became ignited. He ran outside the house to his mother, who succeeded in extinguishing the flames, and took the lad to Ashburton to have his injuries attended to by Dr Leahy. The injuries were, however, of so severe a nature that the child died on Friday. At the Police Court, Timaru, yesterday, a man named Henry Thomas was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment with, hard labor, for stealing on Saturday night a pair of boots which were on show outside Mr J.
