MR HAYHURSTS SWANS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I noticed in the report of the proceedings of the Temuka Cemetery Board, appearing in your issue of the 16th inst., that Mr Hayhurit complained of his swans having been interfered with. Does Mr Hayhurst think that I interfered with his swans, bv tying pieces of wood to their legs ? If he does so, he is Terjr much mistaken. It would be a pleasure to me to protect such birds if they belonged to the Cemetery Board. I would do all in my power to look after them ; but as they are nothing to do with iha Board, I decline to interfere with them in any way whatever. I have plenty to do with my timber or firewood, bt-sides sending it to other people's houses, and I hope that Mr Hayhurst ha* not jumped to the conclusion that it was I who meddled with them ; nor do I intend to, unless they become the property of the Cemetery Board, and then I will do my best for their safety.—l ; am, etc.,
George Philips. Temuka, Oct. 17th, 1884.
