AUCTIONEERS REPORT. TIMARU

Messis Maclean and Stewart report for the past week ending Saturday as follows : Horees-About 30 head were to-day entered at their yards for sale one half of which were extra good draughts ; in fact, those entered by Mr Edward Evans were some of the finest gelding one could wish to see, the manner also in which these horses stood their trials showed that thev were the ri«ht stamp ; the balance of their entries were made up of a few ordinary hacks and inferior draughts. The state of the market to-day was an almost total absence of business done, on'y some half a dozen horses being sold, and these at low prices. For the good sorts there was no demand Hiere is nothing particular in prices realised to-day to report on. Privately during the week they have placed a line of 19 one, two and three-year-old draught colts and Allies at a satisfactory price to one buyer. Sheep —A. medium entry of store sheep came forward co Tuesday's sale at the Washdyke, but. there was little business done, owners preferring to shear rather than accept prices offering. Eat sheepPresent values may be quoted at about 2|d to 2|d per lb. They sold merino wethers at the Washdyke last Tuesday at from 13s to 13s6d ; crossbred ewes and wethers, 16s to 16s tid ; and privately they have placed, several lots at these quotations. Cattle—The market last Tuesday at the Washdyke was very dull, and prices somewhat easier. They sold good forward steers from £3 to £4 12s 6d ; cows from £2 5s to £5 ; yearling at 245. Fat cattle are worth from 17s 6d to 20s per 1001 b. They sold on Tue-day 10 steers and heifers from £6 to £6 15s.

Sheepskin, Tallow and Hides—They held their usual fortnightly sale last Wednesday, when the following catalogue was received, viz., over 600 skins, a few sacks tallow and 30 hides, all of which found ready buyers at the following prices:--Butchers' half-breds, 5s to 5s 2d ; do crossbreds, 4s lOd to 5s ; do merinos, 3s Qd to 43 9d. Farmers' lots—Well saved half-breds, 3s 8d to 4s 9d ; inferior halfbreds, 2s to 3s 2d ; 3s to 4s 2d ; merinos, 2s 6d to 3s 9d. Tallow at 2|d per lb. Hides, from 3d to 4d per lb.

DUNEDIN MARKETS. At the Burnside Yards on Wednesday, October 8, 127 fat cattle were penned—a short supply—and consequently the demand was very active, with an advance in prices ; the quality was good to prime. B--st bullocks brought from £9 12s 6d to £l2 15s, others in proportion ; cows, £4 17s 6d to £B. Prime beef quoted at 25s to 27s Gd ; medium, 22s 6d per 100)b. Fat Calves.—Good vealers sold at 35s each.

Fat Sheep.—3oß3 were penned, of which 1020 were merinos, the quality of nearly all good to prime. Crossbreds brought from 13s 6d to 20s 9d ; merinos, 9s 3d to 15s 9d ; and prime mutton quoted at 3|d per lb. L. Maclean sold for Mr A. Ulelland (South Canterbury), 87 shorn crossbreds at 9s 9d.

Fat ]jambs.—285 penned. For best quality competition was brisk, but a considerable number were small, and for these low prices had to be submitted to. 1,. Maclean sold for Messrs Mathews and Trezise (Temuka), 68 at up to 7s 6d, Pigs—Suckers brought 10s to 16s ; bacon pigs up to 70s. Store Cattle —Some inquiries for wellbred, forward-conditioned bullocks.

Store Sheep.—lnquiries for cross-bred wethers and crossbred ewes in lamb.

Sheepskins,—Green fetohed 3s lid to 5s 9d • do merino, from 3s 4d to 5s 5d ; dry crossbred, Is 2d to 5s 8d; do merino, Is 9d to 5s 31 ; lambskins, 7d.

Hides. - Fair demand for all coming forward. Heavy weights scarce, and worth 4d to 4id per lb. Tallow. —Prime muton is worth 29s to 30s; good to prime, mixed, 26s to 28;* 6d; medium, 22s 6d ; inferior, 18s 6d to 22s ; rough fat, 17s to 21s, Wheat. —Limited demand, but at prices rather easier, Inferior and soft wheat, only fit for fowls, in request for shipment (coastwise or intercolonial). Quotations : Prime milling*, 3s 6d to 33 7d ; ordinary, 3s to 3,s 3,1 ; in?, ferior and fowl feed, 3s 6,d ta 2s Sd,

Oats. —The rnarket continues fir*,!*-, ah though, cpinpetitions at the usual weekly sales has, not. b,een quite so keen. Supplies of really prime very limited. Quotations : Prime milling, 2s B£d to 2s 9£d; short srout feed, 2s 8d to 2s B£d ; infeyio:* 2s4d to2s6d.

B.irley.—Milling in moderate, quantities sells at froni 2s 6cC to 3s ; feed in small lota a,t from Is 6/1 to 2:3., O.fiisa. Seed, —Business very limited. Machine-dressed is worth 4s to 4s 6d : dressed Italian, 6s to 6a 6d ; farmers,' lo,?£i (undressed), Is 6d to 4s ; cocksfppt,, 5,d to b\d per lb.

Pofatuea. In limited supply.—Donald Reid twd Co. sold several lots at prices varying from £4 15s to £5 6a, and for best Northern £5 7s 6d per ton. Horses.—Wright, Stephenson, arid Co. quote first-class draughts at Srom £3O to £35 ; medium, £2O to. £25 ; good hacks and light-harness horses, £l6 to £22 ; medium, £lO to £ls ; light and inferior, £3 to £6.
