Teade "with England.—Notwithstanding the dullness of the times, and the influence at work against the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamers, they seem to be well patronised. Mr Hamevsley appeared for the accused. Inspector Broham, on the case being called, asked for a remand to G-eraldine, as be was not prepared to go on with the case. Mr Hamersley did not oppose the remand, but asked for bail to be fixed. Inspector Broham opposed the granting of bail. Mr Hamersley said then some evidence must be given. It was laid down in the "Justice of the Pence" that some evidence should be given before a remand was asked for. He would waive that so far as the remand w;\s concerned, but if bail was to be refused, he must ask that some evidence be given. His Worship : Has any of the property been recovered ? Mr Broham : None of it. It is believed to be somewhere near where it was •tolen. Mr Hamersley : It is nothing to the prisoner whether the property has been recorered or not. I did not oppose the remand, and bail should ; not be opposed. Mr Broham said to release the prisoner would be to place the prosecution in a very disadvantageous position. Mr Hamersley gaid that could only be judged after some evidence had been given. The Court, aftea brief consultation, refused to fix bail, and remanded the accused to Greraldine, for the 15th inst.
