AUCTIONEER'S REPORT. Messrs Maclean and Stewart report for the past week ending Saturday as follows : Horses.—Again a small entry of horses were to-day booked for sale, and with a few exceptions they were old and of inferior quality. For good dranghts there is an active demand, and prices are becoming better every week. They have sold a number privatelyeduring the wsek, but at auction to-day few lots changed hands, and, as those sold were not tip top, the prices were in consequence low. They sold fairly good draughts to-day at from £23 10s to £29 10s ; inferior sorts, hacks and light harness horses, from £8 to £l4. Sheep. -There is an active enquiry for cross-bred hoggets, and any decent lots offered meet a ready sale. Privately they have sold a few lines of these at good values. Fat sheep—They have placed several lots at prices equal to about 3d per lb. Cattle.—Good stores are in demand, and prices for these are slightly on the increase. They have held no auction sales during the week. Fat cattle rates are from 17b 6d to 20s per 1001 b for prime beef. They have sold a few lots at these quotations. CHRISTCHTJKCH MARKETS. At the Addington Yards on Wednesday heavy entries of all descriptions came forward for the day's supply. The at-
tendance was large, bat business none too buoyant. The fat sheep pens contained some splendid specimeßs of crossbred mutton, for which as high as 24s per head
was paid ; for other sorts from 16s 6d to 21s 9d for crossbred wethers was ruling. Ditto ewes, at from 14s 9d to 17s, and merino wethers from 10ft 3d to 15a per head, being at the rate of from 2|d to 3d per lb, according to quality. The store sheep market was well supplied with raried kinds, and the demand was middling. A grand line of hoggets sold at 16s 6d ; a draft of merino ewes m lamb at 10s ; and a line of crossbred ewes with lambs at 20s—a good proportion of the entry being passed in unsold. A few fat lambs of varied degrees of excellence sold at from 9s to 16s. Io the store cattle market, a large entry of all kinds, from calves to 3-year-old bullocks were an offer. The enquiry was very middling, and at auction very few lines owners. Privately a little business appeared to be doing at current rates. Fat
Cattle—A moderate entry, demand about sufficient to effect a clearance, at late rates, viz., 18a 6d to 21a per hundred, according to quality. Steers sold at from £5 17s 6d to £8 10s; heifer?, £5 5a to £7 7s 6d.— Press. ENGLISH MARKETS. London, Sept. 19. The market for colonial breadstuff's is unchanged. The total quantity of v K "*it afloat for the Unittd Kingdom is 1,750,000 quarters. Tallow—Australian of average quality has declined by sixpence, and is now quoted at 34s 6d"for beef and mutton. New Zealand mutton of prime quality lias advanced to s£d per pound.
