TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual monthly meeting of the above was held last Tuesday evening. Present Messrs Gray (Chairman), Miles, Blyth, and O'Halloran. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Fire letters from the Education Board were read. A letter was read from the Rev. D. Gordon, resigning his position as a member of the Committee owing to leaving the district. HEAD MASTER'S REPORT. The Head Master's monthly report was received, stating that the attendance for the past month was as follows : —No on roll : Boys, 199 ; girls, 148 ; total, 347. Average attendance: Boys, 146 ; girls, 104; total, 250. Working average : Boys, 150 ; girls, 108 ; total, 258. Highest attendance : Boys, 158 ; girls, 119 ; total 277. The report also statsd that a number of the pupils were very irregular in their attendance. After some consideration, it was decided to instruct Mr Wood to notify to th« parents of childr«n, that in the event of irregularity of attendance legal steps will be taken under the compulsory clauses of the Education Act. MR GILLIBI's CASE.
The Chairman slid he was asked to enquire into the unpleasantness of which they had heard. He asked Mr Gilliet why his boy had not attended school, and he replied that he was getting too big apd he was thinking of taking him away. He (the Chairman) said he was glad of it, because he had heard that the boy had been thrashed. He was told by Mr Gilliet at Winchester, afterwards, that he had assaulted Mr Gurr, and he (the Chairman) said be had done what was very wrong. He had since written to Mr Wood stating that henceforth the Head Master only should punish children, MISCEIiLANBOUS. The Chairman also stated that the easing of the ventilators was getting loose and required looking to. The cesspool also wanted the bottom to be taken out of it so that the water would get away through the shingle. He further stated that there were three or four inches of water on the floor of the closets when there is any rain. It was decided to ask the Board of Education to sent their architect to look after the work. The Chairman said the bell bad now been placed in the tower and was work- . ing well. On the motion of Mr Blyth, it was decided to inform the Board that the bell which had been broken had been re-cast at a cost of £3 16s 6d, and had cost £1 0s 6d for placing in the tower, and ask for a refund of the expenses thus incurred as the incidental fund is at low ebb. « On the raoiion of Mr Miles, seconded 6y Mr Blyth, it was resolved that Mr Storey be elected \ice the Rev. D. Gordon. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £l2 12s 3d were passed for payment. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs O'Halloran and Miles were appointed visitors for the ensuing month. The meeting then adjourned.
