Tallow—Donald Stronach reports a continued dull market. The fine weather we are now experiencing had the effect of sending large numbers of all kinds of stock into this week’s marker, the attendance of the usual habitues was also large, and an active day’s business done. The fat sheep maiket was full to overflowing of principally very first class quality mutton; the demand was fairly good throughout, and the high rates of the past few weeks were nearly reached. Cross-bred wethers sold at from 16s to 23s ; ditto ewes, from 15s to 18a 6d ; a small draft of wonderful merino wethers sold at the high prices of 31s and 37s per head ; ordinary sorts from 11s to 16a 3d ; prices all round ranging from 2Jd to 3d per lb, according to quality. A moderate entry of store sheep found a good market at advanced rates ; lines of 4-tooth cross-bred wethers at 15s, and a line of ditto, 4-tooth upwards, at the same figure ; a line of merino wethers at 10s 3d. The pig market was fairly well supplied, and in the face of a quieter demand values gave way. In the fat cattle market an average entry was penned ; demand only middling. Best quality sold up to 21s per 1001 b down to 17s 6d for inferior ; steers selling at from £5 17b 6d to £7 10s ; heifers from £5 to £7 15b. The store cattle market was largely supplied. At auction business was dull, but privately the greater part of the entry was placed. CRHISTOHURCH CORN EXCHANGE. The Corn Exchange report for the week ending Friday evening, the 12th inst: — The market for grain and produce during the week has continued, in regard to all lines, in much the same stale as the preceding one. The outlefbeing limited, no great amount of speculation has been indulged in, although a quiet, steady demand for some lines of wheat still obtains for local requirements. Oats remain firm at previous rates. Barley is dull of Bale, and prices are unaltered. Grass seeds continue in good request, and holders should at once quit while the market lasts, as the weather prevailing lately must soon close the sowing season. Potatoes are held tenaciously by growers for higher figures than shippers feel disposed to give, consequently less business has transpired in the line for the past week than was anticipated. Dairy produce is difficult to move at even lower rates than ruling quotations. The following are the quotations to date ; Wheat—3s 2d to 3s 5d per bushel, f.o.b.
