TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.
The regular monthly meeting of the Timaru Harbor Board was held on Thursday, Present—Messrs W. Moody (Chairman), E. Elworthy, J, Talbot, J. Wilson, J. S. Gibson, J. Kelland, K. F. Gray and E. Acton. Among the correspondence received were letters from Messrs Sutter and Rulleston, promising to attend to the matter of the Board’s protest against the special grain rate on the railways from Timaru to Christchurch.
The Chairman brought up the question of constructing a jetty from the shore for the accommodation of large steamers, which gave rise to a, long and animated discussion. Ultimately the following motion, proposed by Mr Gray, was carried :—“ That the Engineer be requested to take special soundings and prepare a plan and estimate for the construction of say 1000 ft of jetty, north of and parallel to the existing wharf.” The Engineer reported that owing to the unfavorable weather no foundation blocks had been laid down during the month. Two monoliths were added, making the length of the finished work of this contract 129 ft. The whole of the piles for wharf extension contract No. 5 had been dmen, and the superstructure is being proceeded with. The dredging is proceeding satisfactorily. It was decided that the Engineer should order a set of steel wheels from Krupp for the new crane.
Tenders were ordered to bo called for 2000 tons of cement, as recommended by the Engineer. The Manager of the Landing Service reported that the Service had been engaged shipping and landing on only two days during the past month. The i total earnings were £77 17s, and the expenses £lll 19s lid, or an excess ol expenditure of £34 2s lid. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Gibson, seconded by Mr Wilson—- “ That with a view to the more economical working of the Landing Service, it is desirable that it be amalgamated with the Harbor Master’s department ; that the Standing Committee, in conjunction with the Harbor Master, be requested to report upon the best manner of doing so to the next ordinary meeting of the Board.” The Harbor Master reported that 18 vessels, aggregating 5048 tons, arrived
and 21 vessels, aggregating 5299 tons, departed during the month, and the weather being favorable most of them were worked at the wharf. The silt deposited from the dredge behind the T wharf was spreading over the bottom between the T and the beach, from the Breakwater to the Landing Service. A letter was received from the Railway Department, covering voucher for £353 6s I Id, receipts for wharfage and port charges during the four weeks ended 19th July.
