GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above Board was held in the office on Tuesday last. Present Messrs W. U. Slack (Chairman), R. H. Postlethwaite, Kelland, Flatman and Deßenzy. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, as were also those of the special meeting held since. tenders. The following tenders for works were then opened and considered : Contract No. 131— Shingling and fords, Barker’s road, Waihi Downs: A. Reid, £36 ; M. Collony, £27 (accepted). No. 132 Building stockbndge at Guldan’s creek, Orari Gorge road : Huffey and Pizzey, £35 10s; R. Rae, £34 14s (accepted). . . t , No. 133 Formation culverts and cuttings, Sullivan’s road, near Opihi bridge: A. Reid, £110; T. Corkery, . £llß ; J. Webb, £97 10s (accepted). CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence received was read and considered : From Mr J, Seaward and others, asking for a road to be formed running through the old railway reserve at Orari and leading to the Orari bridge.-It was decided to have the work done. From Mr R. Hammond, and others asking for Macdonald’s road to be formed and shingled to Hammond’s road.— Overseer to see if the road is necessary, and the quantity of firewood left in the bush. From Messrs Toomey and others, asking the Board to replace the footbridge over the Kakahu. —An application for tho same had been received previously, and dealt with by the Board in the negative on account of its not being deemed of public utility. —After some discussion on the matter, it was decided that the bridge should be built, provided that the interested parties contribute £2O. From Messrs D. Guthrie and Ljsaght, requesting the Board to re-form about nine or ten chains of road leading to Guthrie s house The Board refused the application on the ground that it did not consider the work required. • , From Mr J. L. Withnall, Christchurch, stating he had a section, containing three acres, near the Orari traffic bridge, which he would offer to the Board for £2O in the event of it being required for protective works. —The Overseer stated he had replied to the effect that the land was not required. . From Mr J. Love, Gapes'Valley, asking for the roadway to lie gravelled across by his house to Mr Slack’s gate, near the creek.—The work to be done, at 10yds to the chain. . . From Mr J. Anderson, Christchurch Found iv, in reply to a letter from Die Oversee*! in regard to price for jaws for the stone crusher. He would parform the work, at 22s per cwt.—The Overseer to attend to the. same, and send up the old jaws at the first opportunity. From Mr John Allan, asking that, as he had disposed of a section to the Geraldine Dairy Factory, his name might be struck off the ratepayer’s roll and the Dairy Factory substituted.—The request was granted. From Mr W. Badger, asking certain particulars in regard to the Board. -Particulars to be given. From the Clerk to the Geraldine iown Board, requesting information as to how the Board purposes dealing with the public pound, it being within the Town District, —The Board decided to suggest that the public pound be left as usual till the whole question between the two Boards is settled by arbitration. From the same, asking for the deeds of roads which have been dedicated to the Queen, within the Town district, viz., from Messrs Maslin, Kallaugher, Tate and another.—The Overseer stated that there were only two deeds in the possession of the Board.—lt was resolved to hand the same over to the Town Board. From Messrs White and Smithson, Tiraaru, forwarding declaration to bo made by the Chairman. [At this stage Mr Flatman, having obtained permission from the Board, retired.] From Mr J. D. Jones, Winchester, complaining that the willows which he had previously brought under the notice of the Boaid were nearly all on the road lice, and he wished them removed at once, otherwise he should take legal steps to compel the Board to do so.—The matter was left to Mr Deßenzy, to see Mr Jones. The road requires re-forming, and shingling with a light coat of gravel to prevent scour. The Board have no shingle reserve within a reasonable distance. “Mr Lewis's application. —To form this road a distance of 54 chains, and place the required number of pipe culverts. would cost about £ . To cut a drain on the upper side only with culverts would cost for labor and material £ . “There are five or six old stone culverts on the road between Gapes' 1 1 ' ’ and Hilton which are continually r ..; >g in, and need repairing. Owii-g .'the Downs here being all fenced and cultivated, these culverts are now too small to carry the water in time of heavy rains. I should therefore recommend that they be taken out and concrete culverts of larger dimensions substituted in their place, “The creek at the Kakabu Bush is also doing considerable damage to the road by overflow. By Mr Wigley’s permission this could be prevented by diverting the creek through his freehold. “Kakabu Bridge.—To_ bridge the stream at the south crossing with a single plank footway would cost £ , and for a stock bridge £ . “ A bridge at the north stream would he of no service in time of even a slight fresh, as a rise of two feet covers a considerable amount of the river flat. In regard to Pye and others’ application, it was resolved —“That the Board cannot alter their former decision.”

Peckham’s Crossing—lt was decided that the work should be done. Clark and others’ application—This work was also decided to be done.

He Mr Love’s application—The Board decided that this work should be done. He Mr Lewis’ application —lt was resolved —“ That tee drain should be cut.”

In regard to the stone culverts on the road between Gapes’ Valley and Hilton, the Board decided that the work suggested by the Overseer should be done. The Creek at Kakahu Bush to be attended to.

He Kakahu Bridge —It was decided that a sccckbridge should be built. Iu regard to the last suggestion of the Overseer, it was decided that the Overseer should try and arrange for a footpath. inspector of nuisances’ report.

“ Sir,— I have to state that since my last report (12th August) I have not had occasion to remark on any nuisance, neither has any person complained to me. The births registered during the same period in this district have been six, and one death has occurred, the deceased person being 77 years of age, death resulting from old age and disorders attendant thereon. I believe the state ot the public health is fairly good.—l am, etc., “ W. C. Andrews, “To the Chairman Geraldine Road Board.” The above report was considered satisfactory. DEPUTATIONS. Mr Gapes had an interview the Board in regard to the nuisance arising from cows and pigs wandering _ on the roads in his part of the district. —Mr Gapes was informed that before another month had elapsed arrangements would be arrived at between the Town Board and the Road Board in reference to the matter. SMALL BIRDS’ NUISANCE. Mr P. P. Wells wrote to the Board complaining that the wheat which had been supplied to him after being poisoned was useless, no birds having been destroyed thereby. Mr Deßenzy spoke as to the efficacy of the poisoned wheat. He had not had any specially poisoned for himself, but he knew of over 300 dead birds as a result from the poisoned wheat he had had laid down, and Mr Lewis told him he had seen a number of birds destroyed by the wheat. The Overseer was requested to see Mr Cook on the matter, and the Chairman to obtain a sample of the poisoned wheat supplied by him. The Overseer was instructed to advertise the price to be given by the Board in future for birds and birds’ eggs. ACCOUNTS, Accounts amounting to £2lB 0s 3d were passed for payment. FINANCIAL. Proposed by Mr R. H. Postlethwaite, seconded by Mr Deßenzy, and carried—- “ That the £ISOO due from the Bank of New Zealand on September 15th, 1884, be dealt with as follows :—£looo to be placed to current account with the Bank of New South Wales, and the remaining £SOO be placed on fixed deposit with the Bank of New Zealand B ’ x months at current rate of interest.” The meeting then terminated,
