A DENIAL.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In the event of you publishing full particulars in connection with a cane heard in the R.M. Court to-day, in which my name was mentioned, I would be glad if you would in the same issue publish the following statement, viz. :—"I emphatically deny having made use of the remarks attributed to me by the defendant, or ;iny remarks which would bear that construction."—l am, etc., K. F. Gray, Chairman High School Committee. Temuka, Sept. Bth, 1884. [We are very glad to find that Mr Gray denies the statement made on oath in the witness-box by Mr Gilliet, to the effect that Mr Gray had said Mr Gilliet had not thrashed Mr Gurr half enough. For a private individual to say such a thing would denote very lax morals, but it would be monstrous for the Chairman of the School Committee to say it. It would amount to offering a premium for assaulting schoolmasters ; it would be an encouragement to every evil-disposed person to commit such outrages. If Mr Gray had said so he would have been unfit for the position he holds, and it gives us pleasure to find that it was not true. —Thb EditOK.]
