THE LINSEED INDUSTRY.
TO THE EDITOR, Sir,— -Knowing you feel a warm interest in our new local industries, I ask the favor of space in your columns to remind all intending growers of European flax (on small or large scale) that no time must be lost in getting seed in tha ground, as the land becomes sufficiently workable aud friable. In dry seasons, August is ruy favorite month to commence linseed drillng ; but this year it was out of the question, as no land was fit to bear the weight of horses, and linseed demands a line-worked surface. Some has already been put in favorably, and is now above ground and promising well. The thirty acres (more or less) rented by the Company lias been too moist up to the present time, but with a continuance of line weather the Directors hope to get all the seed in next week. I may here remind intending purchasers of imported seed to secure some at ouce from Mr Ashwell, Secretary, as there cannot be a great deal left after the Company’s demand is satisfied. Although there is other good seed obtainable in the neighborhood, yet it would bo very desirable for all now seed to ;be sown, for the sake of change. In these hard times, farmers should be fully awake to the great importance of multiplying the remunerative products of the soil. I think flax will be one of New Z salaud’s staples of commerce in a few years, and consider it the absolute duty of all fanners to cultivate a limited acreage (which under the most unfavorable circumstances cannot greatiy affect them), and thus encourage the efforts of an enterprising few who who have started suitable works to manufacture their pro dace into u marketable staple for export and home consumption. As everyone must see, it entirely depends on the acreage grown, whether the mills can be kept constantly at work. I shall be most happy to render any information that lies in my power to intending growers.—l am, ate,, Edwd. Pilbrow. The Willow's, Sept. 5, 1884.
