AUCTIONEERS’ REPORTS TIMAKU Messrs Maclean and Stewart report for the past week ending Saturday as follows : jj oraeß _There was rather a better demand to-day at their yards for good draughts, and, owing to the right stamp ’at present offered, a few buyers did not get their requirements, the prices during the last few months being anything but tempting for those who wish to sell. As spring advances they hope to be able to report an improvement both in prices and demand. A few good geldings were to*day sold at from £22 to £26, and from £l2 to £l7 for inferior sorts. Hacks and light harness horses brought from £6 to £l2. A pair of ponies, with their harness, were sold at £24. Their entries consisted of 28 head, various classes, about one-half of which were placed at the above quotations. Cattle—At the usual fortnightly sale held at the Washdyke Yards last Tuesday, a medium entry of store cattle was pened. The demand for well-grown cattle was fair, and prices rather bettor than at last sale. They sold a few pens of nice steers and heifers at from £3 15s to £5 17s 6d, Two-year-olds from £1 16s to £2 10s. Cows from £3 12s 6d to £5 ss. Fat cattle Present value may be quoted at about 17s 6d per 1001 b. A few were sold at the last Washdyke sale at that figure, and privately they sold a lot of light weights at the same quotation. Sheep—They have an inquiry for good crossbred 2-tooths, and also for merino ewes, prices at present for which may be quoted from lls 6d to 12s 6d for the former, and from 8s to 10s for the latter. They have placed privately a few small lines at these quotations. Fat Sheep—These are keeping at full values, and owners are holding out for prices equal to about 3d per lb. Skins, Hides, Tallow, etc.—Their usual fortnightly sale was hold last Wednesday, when a small entry was received—s4o skins, 18 hides and a few bags of tallow. They cleared the lot out at the following prices For butchers’ crossbreds, 3s lid to 4s lid ; merinos, 3s 4d to 3a lOd farmers’ lots, 3s 8d to 4s 4d. Hides from 3d to 4£ per lb. Tallow at 2jd per lb. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, August 29. New Zealand wheat, per bushel, 3s 3d ; New Zealand oats, 2s 5d ; maize, 4s 7d ; Sugar Company’s No. 1 pieces, per ton, £3l. Adelaide, August 29, Wheat, per bushel, 3s 7d ; flour, town brands, £8 17s 6d ; country do, £7 17s 6d. The market is dull. Freights to London, per steamer, 30s ; do, sailing, 255. The freight market is weak. ENGLISH MARKETS. London, August 28. Wool—At to-day’s auction 10,400 bales were catalogued, A firm tone again prevailed, and good qualities of wool had advanced by a halfpenny. The quantity of wool withdrawn from the sale since the opening aeries was 10,250 bales out of a total of 161,200 catalogued. Hides—At to-day’s auction a fair demand was experienced. August 29. Colonial broadstuffa—Adelaide wheat, ex store, 38s ; New Zealand, 34s to 38s ,* Adelaide flour, ex store, 27a. Australian tallow, average quality, beef and mutton, 35s 6d. Australian mutton tallow of average quality has advanced by 6d, to 36a ; beef remains at 35s 6d. The total quantity of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,860,000 qrs. The wool market continues firm. 11,900 bales were catalogued at to-day’s auction. New Zealand mutton of prime quality continues to realise 5d per lb.
