The new Oriental Banking Company will commence business on Tuesday next. Lord Derby states that he is willing to facilitate a closer connection between Canada and the West Indies. The Gordon Relief Expedition is expected to reach Dongola early in November. Messrs Elder, Smith and Co., general merchants, of Adelaide, have opened a branch establishment in London under the management of Mr Barrsinkh, The Homeward mails via San Francisco, which left Auckland on July 22nd, were delivered here to-day. August 80. Arrived—Ship Mataura with a cargo of 6000 carcases of frozen mutton from the Bluff (left May 12th). The support extended to the new Oriental Bank Company is considered sufficient to justify operations being carried on. The response from Australian shareholders is disappointing.
A movement is on foot to entertain the Australian cricketers at a banquet before their departure. Ci ty of Sydney, from San Francisco, via Auckland. All the smallpox patients are progressing favorably, and no further cases have occurred. Melbourne, August 29. The judgment in the equitty suit Bell v. Clarke has been delivered. The decision is generally favorable to the plaintiff. A sculling match has been arranged between Hanlan and Clifford, to take place within five months, the stakes to be £SOO a side. Arrived, this morning—The Union steamship Te Anau, from the Bluff. August 30. Poppens, the Wellington absconder, did not leave by the Rotomahana on Thursday last, but, contrary to the understanding with the Magistrate, was taken to Sydney by a New Zealand detective, and will be from there conveyed to Wellington. August 31. The grand stand at the Melbourne Cricket Club’s ground was totally destroyed by fire this morning. The damage is estimated at £6OOO. A serious fire occurred at Fleming ton this morning, resulting in the total destruction of the racing stables. Four thoroughbred horses, including Jessie, were destroyed by the fite.
