It is officially announced that Dr Henrich Karl Brugscb, an eminent philiologist and Egyptologist, has been entrusted with a special mission to Teheran. , Cairo, August 26. Major Kitchener reports from D«ngola that spies have informed him that General Gordon obtained a decisive victory over the rebels who' surrounded Khartoum on the 11th inst,, and that during the engagement two prominent rebel leaders were killed.

Sydney, August 27. Sailed, this morning—The Union steamship Hauroto, for Wellington. At a meeting, of the Australian Mutual Provident Society to-day, the quinquennial report, previously announced, was unanimously adopted, and was received with general approbation. All the smallpox patients are progressing favorably. The case at Maitland has been traced to’ the Orient Hotel, in George street, where three casCs of the disease were discovered on the 25th inst. ; August 28. A match for the championship of the world and £SOO a side, has been arranged between Hanlan and Beach, and will take place on the Parramatta river on the first Saturday jn May next year. A sculling match is also arranged between Clifford and ’i'eemer for £SOO a side. ' Melbourne, August 27. The police have discovered a gang of French burglars and coiners, who' 'have, been carrying on their operations'' inthis city. One man has already been arrested, and the capture of that ’others is expected to be effected shortly. Arrived, this morning—Union steamship Rotomahana, from the'Bluff. August 28. Sailed, this afternoon—Union Company’s steamship Rotomah'ana, for the Bluff. Poppens, the Wellington absconder, is on board.
