COMMERCIAL.

DUNEDIN FAT STOCK MARKET.

Pat Cattle—At the Burnside Yards on Wednesday (here was only a small supply yarded — viz,, 101 head, Most of the trade being out of cattle, this number fell far short of the requirements of the butchers, and consequently an advance of fully 2s 6d per 1001 b on the rates current last week took place, best beef making from 22s 6d to 25s per 1001 b. Prime bullocks brought from £9 to £lO 17a 6u ; medium, from £6 to £8 7s 6d. Fat Sheep—There was again a full supply this week, 2980 being panned. Of this number no less than 830 were merinos of fair to good quality. The crossbreds throughout were good, and for such lots as were suitable for freezing there was a good demand, at prices showing no quotable change. For crossbred ewes, however, values were a shade easier; whilst for merino wethers (of which there was an excessive supply forward) a reduction of fully 2s per head had to be submitted to in order to effect sales. Graziers would do well to boar in mind that the Dunedin butchers are not partial to merino mutton, unless indeed it be really prime. For really choice mutton wethers, values equivalent to those current for halfbreds would bo obtained, whereas, excepting in a scare market, medium quality merino sheep would not command within to Id per lb of the same value. Prime crossbred wethers suitable for freezing sold at from 17s to 19s 3d ; medium crossbreds, 12a to 16s 6d ; ineriuo wethers, 9s 3d to 11s 9d ; price* equal to 3d per lb for crossbred mutton, and from 2jd to 2\ d for merino mutton. pigs—Seventy-two penned, and under brisk competition these were sold by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. as follows :—2 at 82a 6d, 4at 655, lat 58s, 4 at 495, lat 41s 6d, 3at 395, 9 at 335, 12 at 31s, 4 at 30s, 9 at 265, and 23 at 245.

DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKET,

Messrs Donald Reid and Co. report for the week ending August 27 : Giain—Wheat: A considerable amount of business has been don# in the finer milling qualities for future delivery, at prices showing a slight improvement, but owing to the broken weather the quantity brought to store has been small, and consequently most of the lots in store have been cleared. CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS,

At the Addington Live Stock Market on Wednesday, a small entry of fat sheep came to hand for the day’s supply. Following on last week’s short supply, the demand was a brisk one, and a substantial advance on late sales ensued, equal to from 2s to 3s per head. Heavy-weight crossbred wethers brought from 18s 9d to 235, medium weights from 15s 9d to 17s. A draft of grand merino wethers sold at 22s per head, and ordinary merino wethers at from 9s 9d to 12s 6d, being at the rate of from 2j|d to 3jd par lb, according to quality. In the store sheep market a few lines of store sheep m 1 mb sold to a fair demand at 15s, los 6d, and 15s 9d per head. A large market of pigs met with a keen demand, and late valuta were exceeded. Baconers sold at from 45-> .o 80s, porkers 32s fid to 445, stores iOsto 20s fin per head. A more than average supply of fat cattle ; demand fairly good. Best quality beef sold up to 21s per 1001 b, medium lo 18s. A large supply of store cattle met with the best market that has been seen of late, and good clearances made about late rates.

CRHISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE

The Corn Exchange report for the week ending Friday evening, the 29th inst :

There has been a fair average amount of business done during the past week in nearly all lines. Sound dry Hunter’s and pearl wheats have met with a ready sale at full rates, Tuscan, although not much sought after, still holds to former quotations. Notwithstanding London telegrams showing a downward tendancy, values here are maintained as follows : Tuscan, 3s 5d ; pearl, 3s 4d ; Hunter’s, 3s 3d. The stocks of oats are light, and although there is little inquiry, excepting for sowing, holders are rot inclined to give way in price. Prime milling com mands 2s 4d ; bright feed, 2s 2d to 2s Sd • Tartars and Dinish, Is lOd to 2s; discolored, Is 8d to Is lOd. in barley, mailers show no desire to purchase any other than first class quality, for which 4s per bushel at Christchurch can be obtained. Ma’t is inclined to hang on hand, doubtless owing to the uncertain state of business, while stocks in store are very large, ileus allowing no outlet for second class. Feed qualities range from Is 9d to 2s 3d, in Christchurch. Beans and peas scarcely meet with any attention, and may be quoted at 2s 9d to 3s for the former, and 3s to 3s 3d for the latter. A brisk demand for ryegrass seed and clovers during the week has elicited a response from holders at a slightly advanced figure for farmers’ parcels, prime samples of which have been placed at from 3s fid to 4s 9d ; town machine-dressed is quite firm at from 4s 3d to 4s 6d ; while some large lines of cocksfoot have changed hands at per lb f.o.b. Potatoes in the early part of the week went up with a rush, as much as 45s per ton at country stations having been obtained, but owing to the drop in the Sydney market a collapse occurred, 37s fid to 40s bemg now about the nominal value. The prospect of the tuber, however, is very encouraging to growers, and there is little doubt that for local consumption alone a better price will shortly be obtained. Butter and cheese are without any change, viz., 8d to 9d for the former, and the latter 4d per lb f.o.b.

ENGLISH MARKETS. London, August 26. At to-day’s wool auction 11,800 bales were catalogued. The market continues firm. August 28. Colonial breadstuff's —Adelaide wheat, ex store, 38s ; Adelaide flour, 27s ; New Zealand wheat, 34s to 38s. Australian tallow, of average quality— Beef and mutton, 35s fid. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company has received the following cablegram from its London office, dated 26th August : Wool —The sales progress firmly ; scoured wool has advanced to Id per lb. Up to date 117,000 bales have been sold. Wheat —Adelaide f.a.q. is worth, c.i.f. to arrive, 35s per 4801bs.
