OUTWARDS CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence outwards during the past fortnight was read. The Clerk said he had written - to the Timaru Herald’s and Mr Hutton and had requested the agent for the Geraldine Guardian to give prices for an indiarubber stamp for the Board. TheTiraaru ■■ Herald charge would be £1 ; that of the Geraldine Guardian 17s 6d; and Mr Hutten’s 17s. The Chairman stated that the offer of Mr Hutton had been accepted. INWARDS CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence received was read and considered ; From W. Bolleston Eeq., M.H.R,, in reply to a letter from the Board re what power, if any, the Board had over the ■ Cemetery Board of Trustees, and also over the main-Toad. He- Btated that in his opinion the Board had no power oyer the Cemetery trustees unless it was itself a Cemetery Board, On the second point he thought that the Amended Act gave full power to the Town Board over the main roads in the district, but if the Board considered it of importance he would advise legal opinion being taken im the matter. Proposed by Mr Dunlop, seconded by Mr Farrell, and carried—“ That the Clerk write to the Chairman of the Cemetery Board asking his opinion as to the handing over the trusteeship of the Cemetery to the Town Board. The Chairman stated that from his own knowledge tha Cemetery Trustees would
be oniy too glad to hand over their trusteeship to the Town Board. Proposed by Mr Mundell, seconded by Mr Taylor and carried —“That the Board get legal opinion as to the Main and County roads,” Prom the Clerk to the Geraldine County Council, in reply to application from the Board for refund of £2 2s, paid by Mr Farrell for a conditional license at last raco meeting at Orari. He stated that as the license was used outside the town district, the money was clearly the property of the County Council. In this several of the members concurred, and the matter dropped. WORKS CCMMITTSE’s REPORT.
The Chairman, on behalf of the Works Committee, reported that they had slightly altered the culvert proposed to be put in opposite the Courthouse, and, as an experiment, had decided to pitch the crossing.—The action of the Committee was approved of in this • instance, but it was clearly understood that ft was not to be used as a precedent in c case of ratepayers applying for ' rossings to their sections.—The Chairman also informed the Board that the Committee had obtained private tenders for a few loads of shingle. Two of the tenders were equal, viz., Is 6d per cubic yard, and, on lots being drawn, that of Mr G. Ward was accepted, FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Chairman reported the result of the interview between a deputation of the Town Board and the Geraldine Road Board which took place that day. [A report ot the same appears in another part of this issue.] Resolved—“ That the Finance Committee bo re-appointed.” Proposed by Mr Maslin, seconded by Mr Mundell and carried—“ That the Clerk write at once to the Colonial Secretary asking for the appointment of an independent person to act as arbitrator re adjustment of accounts between the Geraldine Road Board and the Town Board.” BY-LAWS COMMITTEE’S REPORT.
The Chairman stated that since the last meeting of the Board the By-laws Committee had met and worked up the by-laws, but the Clerk had not bad time to re-write them. He would ask for the period to be lengthened for the report to be brought before the Board, so that the by-laws might be carefully read over by the members. He would suggest that a special meeting be called for the purpose. Proposed by Mr Mundell, seconded by Mr Dunlop, and carried—“ That the consideration of the by-laws be held over for a special meeting, to be convened for that purpose.” MISCELLANEOUS. Resolved that Mr Rolleston be written to re reserves. Mr Dunlop drew the Board’s attention to the disgraceful condition of the domain. He suggested that the control of it should be vested in the Board, in like manner as was proposed to do with the cemetery, and one man could look after both.
The Chairman thought the trustees would only be too happy to hand it over. He would see Mv McKenzie, the Domain Board’s Secretary, and ask him to convene a meeting of the Domain Board to consider the subject. Mr Maslin was opposed to the handing over of anything to the Board that had no income with it. Proposed by Mr Dunlop, seconded by Mr Mundell and carried—“ That the Clerk write to the Domain trustees asking if they are willing to consider the advisability of handing over their trust to the Board.” overseer's report. The Overseer’s report, which was most exhaustive, dealt with what had been done in repairing the roads, etc., during the past fortnight, and gave in detail a list of work requiring to be done in the, town district. The Chairman asked the Overseer to name some of the moat urgent works needed, as he did not think the Board was justified in going into all the work named by the Overseer at once. The Overseer stated that there was a gully in the roadway between Mr Gibson’s and Mr Maslin’s auction rooms that required filling up, and the roadway at the side of the Guardian Office required forming, as well as a few other minor works.
The Overseer was instructed to prepare specifications for these works, and to call for tenders, to be laid before the special meeting of the Board to be held on Wednesday evening next. The meeting then terminated.'
