TEMUKA YOUNG MEN’S CLUB.

A general monthly meeting was held in* the< Club room on Monday night last. The Rev. T. A. Hamilton occupied the chair"” ' Forty-one members were present. The minutes of last meeting were rea l and confirmed. j The Secretary brought -forward the following accounts :■ — Christchurch Young Men’s Club, for material, £6 ; Mr Cooper, papering Clnbi rooms, £2 14s 5d ; Mr Surridge for glass in front window, 10s.—Mr Russell proposed, Mr Clinch seconded and it was carried—- “ That tbe three,accounts be passed for payment.” • ■ ’ : ■ ‘ ' * The following gentlemen; were elected members of the Club—Messrs Glasson, D. Henry, Foweraker, Robt. Livery and McLean. !

After a lengthy discussion re Parliamentary debates, Mr Russell proposed, Mr Langridge seconded, and it was carried—“ That essays and debates be held in the place of the Parliamentary debates; these to be held !on alternate Thursdays,”. The next debate will take place on ; Thursday, Sept. 4th, the subject being “ Smoking Mr Bolton taking the affirmative sides and Mr Russell the negative. The first reading of essays will, take place oh the following Thursday, Sept'. 11th, the,, subject to be “ Colonial Life.” It was decided to give a prize for the best essay. In*reply to a question, Mr Whitehe*d stated that nothing had been done' as yet by the Dramatic Club, and that Messrs Thomson, Bolton and E. Wlutehead were the Committee of management. —Mr Lucas proposed, Mr Rad ford seconded, and it was carried—- “ That Mr W. E. Burke be elected on the Committee in addition to the above gentlemen, and that the Committee be empowered to procure the necessary books, etc., to commence with.” Mr Langridge gave ; notice of a motion re members being jabsent for any length of time, being an i alteration 1 of rule No. 11. Mr Radford wished to call the Bon of the Gymnasium Committee to several boxing gloves which required repairing, j Mr Radford proposed,/and Mr Burke seconded—-“ That a message of synH pathy be sent to Mr E. 'Chapman, who is unwell, from the Club, ! and that the Secretary be instructed to convey this message with the best | wishes of the Club for his speedy recovery.” . Notice was given that the Cricket Committee will-meet on : Monday evening next at 7.30 o’clock, and the* Dramatic Committee at 8.30 the same evening in the Club room.

A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting.
