The Temuka Leader TUESDAY, AUGUST 26, 1884. THE POLITICAL GAME.

So it has come to Sir George Grey’s turn to try his ham! at Cabinet making. Whose turn will it bo next we wonder ? Sir George Grey will doubtless fail. Major Atkinson and Mr Otmond, it is said, refuse to have anything to do with him, so do the members of the late Ministry, and consequently he lias nothing to work upon hut new material. According to the correspondent of the Lyttelton Times he is making desperate efforts to get a Ministry together, and their names are—Messrs Wakefield, Dargaville, Newman, Hursthouse, Hamlin, Pearson, Hobbs, and Fiizaerbert. We may say we do not believe this. Mr Wakefield could hardly join Sir George Grey ; unless he finds himself forced to do so by a high sense of duty. We know that Mr Wakefield used to dub the Knight of Kawau “ the greatest statesman in the southern hemisphere,” and Sir George Grey used to call Mr Wakefield “ ray talented young friend,” but that was a long time ago. They have not been so complimentary to each other lately. However, office is a very great temptation to people to make up their differences, and it may be that Mr Wakefield is not averse to getting into office at any cost. If Sir George Grey succeeds, his prospects are ruined, for they will not stand a day ; and if be does not get in with him he has very poor prospects-: so it does not matter to him. Then Dr Newman and Mr Hursthouse are very staunch supporters of Major Atkinson, and are not likely to forsake the only chief who is likely to succeed in leading. The fact is the report in the Lyttelton Times appears untrue on the face of it, for it is not possible that men like these would have the courage of undertaking such responsibilities in such critical times. Our opinion is that Sir George Grey will fail ; that Mr Ormond will not ateempt it, and after that we will have the Atkinson Ministry back again.
