ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, August 22. The English share list of the ne* Oriental Bank Company closes on September Ist. The Australian list will close on the 15th of the satire month. Dr Nachtigal has annexed territory to the southward of the Orange river. Five thousand British troops under the command of General liarie are expected to reach Dongola on December 6th, m route to Khartoum to the relief of General Gordon. Tenders for the balance of £20,000 of the Ouraaru Harbor Board loan have been opened. Those at £lOl and upwards will receive allotment in full. It has transpired that the authorities at the Horse Guards insist on the expedition to Khartoum proceeding by the Nile route, and not via Souakim. The death of Edwin John Brett, the well-known publisher, is announced. August 23. The circular issued by the Prince of Wales to the Colonial Governors urges the latter to have a most complete representation of the colonies at the Exhibition to be held in 1886. Sir Saul Samuel predicts that the expedition to the relief of General Gordon by way of the river Nile will be a failure, ' Rome, August 22. Cholera continues to spread in the north-west of Italy. Several cases are now reported at Milan, Turin, and Genoa. Geneva, August 22. Cholera has made its appearance here. Alexandria, August 22. It is announced that Major-General Earle will command the Angio-Egyptian expedition, which it is proposed to despatch by the Nile route to Khartoum in October next. The British troops attached to the expedition will number 5300. Capetown, August 21. Telegrams to hand from the Transvaal state that the Republican Executive has issued a proclamation at Pretoria, announcing the creation of the Boer Republic in Zululand, and its refusal to further recognise independence of the Native Zulu chieftains. The New Zealand Shipping Company (Limited) have received the following cablegram, dated London, 20th Aug. : —“ Ruapehu arrived yesterday at Rio de Janeiro ; refrigerator working working well, and meat in prime condition.
