LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Forged Notes.—The police hare received intimation that forged notes of the Union Bank of Australia are again in circulation. Cbicket. The cricket match between the Australians and a Gloucester Eleven resulted in a one innings victory for the former with 136 runs to spare. Pbesonau.—We are glad to learn that Mr George Morris, of . Pleasant Point, has. returned home from his trip to Wellington. He passed here by the express train from Christchurch yesterday. Repairing the Triumph.— Mr Fraser has arranged for a number of artisans from Dunedin to work in repairing the steamer Triumph, the terms being 10s per day and free passages to Auckland and back.
Hkavt Duty,—The New Zealand Sugar Company have paid the sum of £17,000 duty upon one entry alone, representing sugar in the hands of the Company at present. This sum represents duty on 4,000 tons.
Petition Refused. — Judge Gillies has declined to sanction the alteration of the duration of the lease of the Mount St. Mary Convent Property, (Auckland) from twenty-one years, as in the trust deed, to sixty years as petitioned. Power will besought by Act of Parliament. Incredible.—A country paper in Otago states that Dr. Parry, who has served his sentence for the Kaitangata manslaughter case, has received a Government appointment in Victoria, the Medical Association having bestirred themselves in his interest.
A Dissatisfied Costitubnot.—The Stanmore electors, it is said, purpose burning Mr Reese, their Member, in effigy, and have also sent him by steamer a rat-trap. They must bo rather hard to please. They gave their late member, Mr Pilliet the name of “ the rat.” '
Sheep Wobeyxn&.—-Mr Thos. Palmer, of Cade Bay, near Temuka, has had the misfortune to have a number of sheep, of the value of £3O, destroyed by dogs during the last week. He notifies in our advertising columns that, he has laid poison on his farm, and that trespassers will be prosecuted. Railway Retuenb.—The returns for the railways for the four , weeks ended July 19th show the receipts to be: — North Island, £20,461 I7s lid ; Middle Island, £58,086 12s lOd. Percentage of expenditure to receipts North Island, 70.12 ; Middle Island, 59.78.
Ball at Woodbuet. —Despite the inclemency of the weather, the ball held at Woodbury on Wednesday evening last was very successful, there being a capital attendance. Another ball will bo given in the schoolroom at Woodbury on Friday evening next, under the auspices of the School Committee, the proceeds of which will be devoted to the augmentation of the children’s treat fund.
A Unique Show. —A show of children up to seven years old was held on Thursday in connection with the Industral Exhibition, Dunedin. There were over seventy entries each of boys and girls. A special prize was given to the mother with most children alive for the number of years married, and it was taksn by Mrs Wallace, who had been eight years and three months married, and had seven children.
Temuka Pabk Boaed.—Some time ago Mr H. Nicholson, of Waitohi, brought under our notice the fact that there was adjoining his land a section of 50 acres of land reserved for recreation purposes. We drew the attention of a member of the Park Board to this, and obtained from Mr Nicholson plans of the reserve. The Park Board made some attempts to secure this piece of land, but were unsuccessful. The matter, however, was placed in the hands of Mr Rolleston, who has now succeeded in securing it for the Board. It will yield considerable revenue to the Board, and enable them to improve the Park. The credit of disoov ering the existence of the’ reserve belongs to Mr Nicholson.
A Charitable Jew. —The Jewish Chronicle records the death, on June 11th, at Baden, near Vienna, of Herr Adolph Pollack, Ritter von Rudin, one of the greatest manufacturers of lucifer matches in the world. Iri 1816, when not yet 20 aeres old, he founded a factory at Prague, and in later years ho established factories at Vienna and Budweis, and warehouses in London, New York, Sydney, and Yokohama. The chief monument of his charitable munifence was a Rudolphmum, which he erected in Vienna to commerate the birth of the Crown Prince. In this establishment 75 pupils attending the Polytechnieum are lodged and boarded free of expense. They are also provided with means to continue their studies. Dr Sinclair, the celebrated American dentist will visit Temuka on the 17th and 18th September only. Messrs White and Smithson, solicitors, Timaru, notify that they hare £SOOO, and smaller amounts, to lend, on freehold security, afc loweat current rates.
