TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.
A meeting of the Timaru Harbor Board took place on Thursday List. Pre--Bent_Messrs W. Moody (Chairm m), E. Elworthy, A. Hayes,' J. Wilson, J. kelland. E. Acton, J. S. Gibson, M. Jouas, and K. F. Gray. Among the correspondence was a letter from the Rail way,Department, declining tp reduce the rate of haulage on coal from the wharf from Is 6d to Is. A. further letter had been sent to the Department, urging additional reasons for the reduction but no reply li-d lie receive. The owners of the barque Formosa wrote complaining that a. consignee'of * cargo of coals had deducted £3B from tlie freight in consequence of the vessel not being discharged at the wharf. The.Manager©f the Landing Service, reported that during the month 23 vessels had arrived. He had landed and shipped in all 2889 tons, for which 'work'the gross earnings had been £491 16s Bd, and the net£267l6s 3d. It was resolved, on the suggestion of the Manager of the Service made at the previous meeting—" That for coal" landed at the Service the pit certßcate be taken as the weight dealt with, and that the Secretary advertise this to come into effect on the 20th August." The Engineer reported that little progress had been made with the construction of the breakwater, owing to b;id weather. The wharf extension contract was proceeding favorably. The breakage to the new crane had been repaired, and the gear for increasing the travelling speed had been received, and would be fixed as soon .as practicable. Dredging was being carried on whenever pp.ciicable. The work of fixing the screwmoorings' was being proceeded with by the contractors. The Harbor Master reported the arrival of 23 vessels of the aggregate register tonnage of 4720 tons, and the depaiture of 24 vessels of the aggregate register tonnage of 5923 tons during the month of July, 1884. The soundings taken during the month of July showed the only alteration in depth of water to bo alongside the wharf, with a decrease inside the T wharf. The Committee appointed . to revise th<- rates charged at the port, advised a reduction of 6d per ton on coal landed at the service, and that the whaTfage for frozen meat he £d per carcase. The report was adopted. A long discussion took place on the rates charged on lots of 100 the railway on tons between Timaru and Lyttleton.. Mr Hayes moved, and Mr Elworthy seconded—f That the attention of the , Government be called to the extra charge of Is per ton, imposed under ' Clause 9, N, Minerals,' on coals discharged at this ) port and forwarded to the country, and that the Government be requested to > a ter the same so as not to be detrimental J 'o this port." Tit's was cariiet unanimously. f The Railway Department forwarded £221 15s 6d, for wharfage for the four weeks ended 21st June. After passing accounts the meeting terminated. i
