The negotiations which hav« been proceeding between England and Mexico for the conclusion of a treaty have terminated successfully, and a : formal document lias been duly signed. Arrived—The steamship Orient, from Melbourne. Mr Parnell is urging Mr Gladstone to proceed with the Federation Enabling Bill at the autumn session. A company of Italian operatic artistes have been ' received in London with approbation, v ‘ Good accounts are to hand from the English wheat districts, and the harvest prospects are favorable. The hop crop accounts are now more favorable, the recent fine weather having effected a great improvement. August 8. In the House of Commons last night, Lord Edmund Fitzmaurice stated, in reply to a question, that the reported seizors by Admiral Courbet of the harbor and coal mines at Kelung Island, Formosa, was untrue. There had not, he added, been any rupture of the Franco-Chinese negotiations for the settlement of the Langson affair, and parleying was still proceeding. The river Nile is rising fast, and serious consequences are anticipated from the floods. Prime New Zealand frozen mutton is unchanged at fid per lb. It has transpired that if an expedition to Khartoum is decided uponj the force will proceed via Dongola and not by way of Souakim as originally states. 'The proposed railway from the latter place to Berber has been abandoned. August 9. The cargo of frozen meat. ex steam ship Victory, has been landed in good condition. The reported seizure of Kelung by Admiral Courbet, the truth of which was denied in the House of Commons by Lord Edmond Fitzmaurice, i« now fully confirmed, and it has transpired that it has been notified to the Chinese Government that the occupation of Kelung by the French forces will continue until the demands of France for satisfaction on account of the Langeon affair have been satisfied. The proposed indemnity has now been reduced in ■mount to 80,000,000 francs. The death is announced of Professor Erasmus Wilson, aged 75. The Australian Meat Preserving Company has been registertered with a capital of £IOO,OOO, The Tory party are delaying the passage of the Federation . Enabling Bill. Sir Stafford Northcoto has intimated that he will warmly support the measure if it be introduced m October. Information; received from Trinidad states that Frederick Palgrave Bailee, C.M.G., died there on Friday last, aged 57, Mr Bailee was formerly Colonial Secretary of Western Australia, which position ho resigned, and in 1877 was appointed to the Governorship of British Honduras, . Judge Panl, of Queensland, who* has been on a visit to England, returns to Australia by the s.e. Iberia, - The harvest is proceeding rapidly, both in England and on the Continent.
