The store sheep market was better supplied than of late, and business pointed to a alight improvement ; a line of three-quarter fat two and four-tooth wethers sold at 14s 3d, and lines of crossbred ewes in lamb at lis 6d, 13s sd, 14a,; 15s lOd and 16a. CHRISTCHTJRCH COEN EXCHANGE. The Corn Exchange report for the week ending Friday evening, the Bst inst: — Transactions in grain and produce for |ihe past week have been limited to supplying local requirements. Sound samples of Pearl and Hunter's white wheats are in request by millers, while Tuscan is almost quite neglected. Outs are for the present quite dormant, holders • not earing to trade except at the ruling , quotations, while buyers do not see their • way to operate at these figures. > Barley : remains at foamer quotations, with very i little inquiry. Ryegrass and clovera are L in some req'uest for spring sowing, and i meet with ready sale for prime quality, i Peas and beans do not command that t attention which they met with a short . time a.go, doubtless owing to the stagnation in the oat market. There has been a fairly brisk inquiry for potatoes, but
j buyers refuse to advance the figure to i what growers cousider commensurate with the time of year, the consequence being that little business has transpired in the tuber. Butter and cheese show no marked difference in value or demand. The quotations as under are to date : Wheat—Tuscan 3s 4d, Pearl 3s 3d, Hunter's white 3s 2d, seconds 2s 3d to 2s 6d, chick wheat Is 9d to 2s. Mr Donald Stronach (on behalf of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited) reports for the week ending August 6 as fohows : Fat Cattle-A short supply came to hand, only 147 head being yarded. "About one-half of these were good to prime quality beef, the balance inferior and medium. Owing to a portion of the trade being supplied by private purchases, also last week's full market, the demand was not active, and prices ruled tor prime beef about equal to last week's ; but inferior was lower. Best bullocks brought £lO to £lO 15s; others, £5 10s to £9 10s ; and cows in proportion. We quote i prime beef, 20s to 22s 6d; ordinary, 15s to 17s 6d per 1001 b. Tallow—Medium 24s to 26s 6d, and rough fat 19s to 23s per cwt. Grain —Wheat: There is a better demand for really good milling kinds, without, however, any disposition to jay higher prices; and as the few vendors who still hold such samples decline to quit at prices lately quoted, but few salea are being made. We quote prime railling velvet aud Tuscan, 3s 4d to 3s 5d ; others, 3« 3d to 3s 4d ; medium, 2i 9d to 3s 2d, for which there is but little demand; inferior and frosted, Is 6d to 2s 6d. Oats : There is a quiet business done in these, and slightly better i prices are now obtainable, especially for bright short samples ; discoloured are also easier disposed of. We quote stout bright milling, 2s Id to 2s 2d ; short bright feed, Is lid to 2s ; discoloured short Tartarian and sparrowbill, is lOd to la lid ; long, ls9d to Is lOd.
