BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The ordinary ,monthly meeting of the . Sooth Canterbury Board of Education was held on Thursday, Present—Dr Poster, Messrs S, W. Goldsmith, J, Talbot, M; J. 1 Gray, and R. A. Barker* Dr Poster was voted to the chair. The Secretary, Major Bamfield, slated tli©, Chairman, who'trie unfortunately absent through illness, had sent a written statement of what be had done during the month. The'following part, of the statement refers more particularly ; to this district:— Appointments of pupil teachers bad been made to the St. Andrews, Waitobi Plat, and' Orari Bridge Schools. Miss Mete* dith had been appointed), mistress of Kakahu Bush School, paving the pupil teachership at the Kakahu School vacant. “Dr Anderson, the new Inspector, had arrived, arid bad commenced a tour of the schools. He would submit a report to the Board. . "With regard to the unused school sites, he believed the Board was now in a position to deal with them, and lie ’would, be glad, if a. Committee were r appointed/to yislt the sites, prepare con* ditiou’s of lease, and.report to the Board. He regretted that a fire had occurred in the Board's stationery depdt, and eaused a very 'serious 'loss, : and he suggested < that a formal ‘inquiry asto the of the fire should be held for the satisfaction of the Board, and of the Education Department, who desired a .report of it. On the'motion, of Hr Talbot, the action taken by. the Chairman was approved. On the motion of Mr Gray, the Chairman and Mr Talbot w* r * appointed a Committee to make inquiries into the cause of the fire in-the depdt, and make a report of,the result-to the Edncation Department. The Architects reported that the\ Kakahu Bush School had been satisUc* J? torily completed according to the plans of the Board. Cortain repairs to the janitor’s 1 house at Timaru wore, authorised. Reports, by the' late Inspector (Mr H. W. Hammond), and the present Inspector (Dr Anderson) were read. It was decided;, to allow three pupil teachers who had completed their course, to remain at the. Timaru School till the ' <end of the present year. It was decided to bold over the draining ' i of the grounds of.the. Wairaate school till next year, when .funds may be more i .plentiful. . . . . A letter was read from the Winchester Committee, covering a resolution expresssing / further ' r'idissatisfaction with the * teaching' staff./ 1 ' The Inspector was requested to examine the school, and lay f the results before' tbe.qext meeting of the f Board. ;....... 1 A letter was readfropn the Kakahu Com- ( mittee expressing dissatisfaction with the i teaching staff, stating that the attendance ' was falling off; greatly,' and requesting that, a special examination of the school i be made immediately. The request for : an immediate examination was referred > CO; the Inspector, .the result to be laid , before the Board at.the next meeting. s A deputation . waited on the Board to protest against the removal of the teacher ’.. of the Paidbra school, but the Board, aftoex, . considering the master, resolved to adhere to their former decision, and the applies- V t tibns for the post, six in number, were ordered to be forwarded to the Chairman of the Psreora Committee. ‘ The Chairman, Dr Foster, and Messrs 1 Barker and Talbot were appointed a Oom- ( mittee to go into the question of leasing i the unused school reserves, the Chairman . t,o be convener, pnd to report to the next meeting of the Board. A petition asking the Board to make 1 the Timaru Side School independent of \ the Main School, and furnish it with an ‘ i efficient teaching staff, was road.—The i' Board decided to hold it over till next i meeting. /;./ ....
