TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held Tues ay. Present Messrs Talbot (Chairman), Barker, Quinn, Paterson, and Smith. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. DEPUTATION. S Mr Elkers applied for 12 or 15 feet of pipes to put in front of his gateway. There was a deep ditch there whioli rendered the place impassable. He also pointed out that the road between Edgai s and Ackroyd's wanted grass sown thereon so that the ground might not; be washed away in time of flood. The burveyor said the contractor had made a mistake in parrying out his contract, and that it was intended to sow grass on the road. The Surveyor was instructed to examine Biker’s gateway, and grant the pipes if necessary. , , Mr J. A. Young interviewed the Board, stating that if given the of the gravel reserve at Windiest* r, he * ould give a road to the Board to curt out shingle, which would save a distance of half a mile in carting.—The matter was adjourned until further information was obtained from the Land Office. Mr Young also applied for pewer to erect a verandah in front of; a shop in Winchester, recently occupied by Messrs Binskiu and Gimpson.—The application was granted on the usual terras. Mt Parke waited on the Board in reference to a culvert on the road near his place, which was represented as in an impassable state. —It was resolved to pul n”cheap culvert in. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of A 223 Is 4d were passed for payment. OFFICERS. Out of twenty applicants for the position of working overseer, Mr F. Archer was appointed. Out of seven applicants for the position of clerk, Mr Geo. Bolton was ap-

pointed. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was rend from Mr F. Oldfield, to the effect that he had sustained some damage to his land, on which he had expended £2O, He would accept £lO, and if it were not paid to him he would sne for the full amount.—lt was decided to refer the matter to arbitration. From Mr Aspinall, enclosing £2B 15a Id, the amount of rates received by him after having taken legal proceedings against defaulting ratepayers. From Mr J. Harrop, drawing attention to a nuisance near his place, caused by the overflow of the Sodtown creek.—The Inspector of .Nuisances reported on the same matter, and the Overseer was instructed to have the nuisance abated as much as possible. From Mr Lawson,” asking leave to graze sheep in the Board’s paddock.—lt was resolved to inform Mr Lawson that the Board could not see its way to grant the request. From Mr Job Brown, drawing attention to the state of (lass Street, and asking that it be shingled.—The matter was deferred. From Property Tax Department, advising mat Uie amended valuation roll for the district had been posted. From Mr C. M. Brooke, of Kaianoi, forwarding accounts for £5 for poisoned wheat. It was resolved — fi Tnat Mr Brooke be informed that the wheat was found to be useless and that his advertisement in the Lyttelton Times of 4th July supports such statement, and the Board therefore declines to pay the accounts. From the Public Works Department, forwarding plans of Native lands taken for railway purposes at Arowhenua, and stating that a portion of the land now claimed by the Natives was included in such purchase. —The matter was left in the hands of Mr Quinn to inquire into. From Mr Thos. Burke, asking for the footpath on the west side of Wilkin street to be repaired, —Granted. ' From Mr R. Buck asking the Board to form a road from the Main South Road to his land at Rangitata.—The Surveyor was instructed to report on the matter. From Mr R. G. Crocker applying that a drain running alongside of Hilton should be cleaned out.—The Surveyor was insrtucted to report on the matter, TENDERS. Contract No, 12—Fencing approaches, Winchester Bridge ; M. Flaherty, £l3 9s (accepted) ; M, Dunn, £l7 2s 6d ; RFlanagan, £l9 16s 9d ; T. Cleary, £2O 2s 6d ; E. Counihau, £29 14s l£d. Contract No. 13 Formation streets, Arowhenua ; E. Counihan, £2 9s (accepted) ; A. Clinch, £3 ; R. Comer, £3 ; M. Flaherty, £3 17s. overseer’s report. The Chairman Tctnuka Road Board. Sib,—l have the honor to report for the month ending August 4,1884, Contracts on hand have made slow progress during the month owing to the bad weather, ano some let last month have not been started yet. The roads in some parts require shingling. The Middle Swamp Road, near Mr Burrows’s and near Green Hayes, require about 50 yards at each place ; Mr Talbot’s road a’so require# about £ . The footpath applied tor by Messrs Comer and barcombe wilt cost about £ ——, and might be done, as the Town Board is doing Gass street which joins it. Mr Motley has again complained about the footpath near Ids property’, I have not heard from the owner of the adjoining property yet to get his consent, but I am informed he signed the petition for having it done at one time. The Board’s cottages are all empty, and I have not been successful in getting the tenants to settle before leaving. The contractor for Badham’s drain, whe undertook the work fo; three years, hat declined to go on with it. Will it be re-let 1 —Yours etc., P. Sinclair.

With regard to the clause in reference to ilie repairs to roads, tenders were ordered to be invited, and the footpath applied for by Messrs Corner and Larcombe was agreed to. With regard to Badbam’s drain it was ordered to be let to Mr Bz.dbaru, and failing hie acceptance tenders to be again called Lt. The Board then adjourned.
