Pedestbianism. A half-mile flat race between Messrs J. M. O’Connor, of Timaru, and James McFarlans, of Ashburton, takas place to day at Timaru. The race is creating some interest. Bate. —The South Orari Board of Conservators notify that they have struck a rate of one farthing in the £ (not on* half penny in the £as previously announced) and that it is now payable at the Temuka Boad Board office. The CoaxiißY Estate.—The trustees under the will of the late Mr Costley hare made an application to the Auckland Supreme Court for five per cent commission for their services in connection with the testamentary estate. The Judge said that that would amount to £SOOO, and decided to take time to consider his decision.

Temuka Town Boabd. —A meeting of this Board takes place to-morrow evening. Gbkaldinb Town Boabd.—The adjourned meeting of the Board will be -held in the Literary Institute, Geraldine, to-morrow evening, for the purpose of receiving appli cations for the office of Clark, Overseer, etc., and other business. Blub Ribbon Celeb ration. —The anniversary of the Temuka Blueßibbon Gospel Temperance Mission will bo ' celebrated by a tea and A 1 meeting on Thursday evening next. The tea will be on the tables in the Volunteer Hall at'6 o’closk, and the meeting will commence at 8. The Supposed Inobndiabism at Wqodbubt. —Up to last evening nothing further had transpired in reference to the origin of the fire at Mr Flack’s farm at Woodbury. It has,-however, been ascertained thatj the insurance on the stacks had been allowed to run out. • Fibb.—By a fire at Hatton, King and Co’s, confestionory factory, Dunedin, the large stock of goods and ingredients were destroyed, and the valuable machinery rendered almost useless. The insurances 6n stock, plant and machinery are £750 in the Hamburg; £660 in the Equitable, and £650 in the Mercantile Union. Football. —A match between the second eleven of the Timaru High School and a team representing the Temuka District High School Club took place at Temuka on Saturday last. Stubbs captained the Timaru team and McLeod the Temuka team. The Timaru lads scored a very easy victory over their opponents, obtaining 12 points to nil. The day was a very unpleasant one, and the ground very sloppy. Attempted Suicide bt a Pbisonhs.—A prisoner, named O’Flaherty, awaiting trial on a charge of larceny, attempted to commit suicide at Outram (Otago) lock-up on Thursday morning. Ha had been received from Invercargill the previous night, and on; the constable visiting him tbout ten o’clock he found him in the act of J cutting bis throat. He had the knife hidden ,ia a truss ho wore next his skin. The wound was not dangerbus. Sheep Wobkting. —Mr E. Burke; of 1 Geraldine Flat, notifies that after this date poison for dogs will bo laid in his paddocks. He has been obliged to take this step in consequence of having a number of his sheep worried. . Fifteen of his best sheep, which ho kept specially for breeding purposes, have thus been destroyed. It is a great pity that owners of dogs having a taste for this kind of thing do not either keep them on the chain or destroy them.- ■; ■ ■ New Seeds.—Mr A. H. Turnbull, ithe Timaru agent of the N.Z. Grain Agency and Mercantile Company (Limited), announces that the Company have just received their first shipment of the now season’s grass and clover seeds from Messrs Alex. Cross and Son, Scotland. They also have American cow grass and clover seeds now landing. The Company are now receiving orders ; for “ Samuelson’s ‘ Low-lsvel ’ Twine Binders " for delivery in time for next harvest. i Sale op Fbbbhold Pbopbbtt.—Mr K. F. Gray will hold a sale of freehold property at his salerooms, Temuka, to-morfow. Among the lots'to' be submitted will be two 20 acre sections at Kakahu, now in the occupation of Mr Geo. Meredith, and on one of which a coal-pit has been opened. The other lots comprise, Mr Joseph McClintoik’s house and section at Waitohi, a 336-acre farm at Orari, and sections in Arowhenua Wallingford, Andrewville and Geraldine townships. The Elections.— I The Wellington correspondent of the Press, writing on July 26, says':—lt is stated that an attempt is to‘ be made to upset the Te Aro election on the ground that a. number of aliens voted. The Post is responsible for the statement that the Hon O. J. Pharazyn, notwithstanding the fset of his being disqualified for an illegal practice, voted at the Foxton election, thereby rendering himself liable to {a penalty not exceeding £IOO. It appears that bis name is on the ordinary roll in that district, and not on the supplementary roll of persons convicted of corrupt and illegal practices, as it ought to have been, and as it is in the case of the Thorndon electorate. Applications for the post of clerk and working overseer to the Geraldine Town Board must be in by 4 o’clock to-morrow afternoon. Tenders for improving several streets in the Temuka Town district, and for- the lease of a number of reserves, close to-morrow afternoon at 4 o’clock.
