ACCIDENTS, OFFENCES, ETC.
Mr Barton Ireland, a m-mbep of the well-known firm of Ireland Bros., tanners (Auckland), was seized with a; fit af coughing at one. o’clock on Wednesday morning, during which he broke a blood vessel and died an hour later. It is believed his death' was caused byt overexcitement and ovt-r-exertion in respect of the elections. When the poll was declared at Wanganui last Tuesday .night the hustings broke down. Mr Ballance was just about to speak, when ail'on the hustings were precipitated ten feet down. No one was hurt, except a boy who gut his arm hurt. There Was great excitement over the result, but no ill-feeling was shown,, One of the rowdies who assaulted the police at (he lV Aro (Wellington) e eel ion last Tuesday, night wns/fioeir £6 jiiivyWednesday. Several other cases were adjourned. 5 eAt ihe Divorce Court, Wellington, on Wednesday a decree absolute was grouted in the case of Harris v. Harris; A man'named Gardner, residing at Kaitoko (Wellington) had a narrow escape of being killed on Tuesday evening. After registering his vote he imbibed freely, and prpceeded home along the railway line. After going a short distance he sat down on the rails and went to sleep. On the evening train approaching, the enginedriver noticed an object in front and slackened speed. The cowcatcher caught the man and inflicted a nasty scalp wound. Gardner is now recoveiing. Three children were knocked down in the Dunedin streets on Wednesday by a horse which had taken fright at the shafts of the vehicle he was attached to becoming detached. One of the children was badly cut, the other two escaped unhurt. In the divorce case Kloglein v. Kloglein and Martin (Dunedin), a decree nisi was granted. Te Meihana has been committed for trial on a charge of murdering a native woman at Ohincmufu. He was taken to Auckland on Thursday in a charge of a constable, and lodged in Mount Eden Gaol. The prisoner is twenty-seven years of age, and intelligent looking, though he has been twice an inmate of a lunatic asylum. He speaks English well., A man named W. Friclington, a farmer of Sandon (vVellington), after voting «t Feilding on Tuesday, was thrown from his horse while returning home and *uetuined injuries from which ho died. He leaves a wife and family.
