GERALDINE TOWN BOARD.

The first meeting of the newly-elected Town District Board for Geraldine was field in the Courthouse, on Monday evening last at 7.30 p.tn. Mr A. Fisher took the minutes of the meeting. Members Present—Commissioners Maslin, Pearpoint, Mundell, Farrell, Taylor. Dunlop and Huffey. Mr C. E. Sherratt, as Returning Officer, occupied the chair, and read the proclamations whereby the Board was brought into existence ; after which he intimated that the first duty of the Commissioners would be to elect their chairman. ELECTION OP CHAIRMAN. ■ Proposed by Mr Mundell and seconded by Mr Farrell—“ That Mr Pearpoint b« elected Chairman.” As ao amendment it was proposed by Mr Dunlop and seconded by Mr Pluffey —“ That Mr Maslin be elected Chairman.'’ Uu the amendment being pot, only the pmpr-oer and seconder of Mr Maslin voted in its favor. ,

The original motion was then put, when five voted for and two against it. The Returning Officer declared Mr Pearpoint duly elected. Mr Pearpoint on taking the chair thanked the members for the honor conferred on him. MISCELLANEOUS, Mr Maslin then spoke as to the advisability of deciding as to what should be deemed a quorum for their meetings. It was pointed out that sub-section 4 of the 30th clause of the Act decided that question. : It was decided that copies of the ,Act should be obtained for the use of the members. The Chairman , considered that applications should be at once called for the office of Clerk, Overseer, etc. Proposed by Mr Maslin, seconded by Mr Muridell “add carried —“ That applications be cabled by advertisement in the Gekaleine GrUARDiAN for a Clerk and Overseer in connection with this Board at a salary of £BO per annum. Applications to.bo sent to the office of the Chairman bn or before Wednesday 30th inst.,-where’ specification of? duties can be seen.” Mr Maslin was requested to act in conjunction with the Chairman in drawing up specifications of duties in connection with the clerkship, etc. Proposed by ( Mr Maslin, .seconded by. Mr Dunlop-—“ That the banking account of this Board be kept with the Bank of New Zealand.” As . an . amendment, Mr Pearpoint proposed and. Mr Huffey seconded — ; “ That the banking account of this Board be kept with the Bank of New South Wales.” On the amendment being put three voted for and four against ; the original motion was therefore carried. Mr Maslin spoke as to the necessity of calling for the services of a. good working man to look after the waterways of the streets, etc. It was ultimately'decided to postpone consideration of the matter till next meeting. Proposed by a Mr. Maslin, seconded by Mr Taylor and carried—“ That Messrs Dunlop and Taylor act in conjunction with the Chairman as a Working Committe?.”

The Chairman was requested to write to the President of the Literary Institute asking permission for the Board to hold their meetings therein for the present. The Chairman, at the suggestion of Mr Maslin, was also requested to write to other Town Boards rmd the Town Clerk,-Timaru, for copies of their bylaws.

Proposed by Mr Maslin, seconded by Mr Huffey and'carried—“ That Mr C. E. oherratt be appointed to collect the Dog Taxes pro. tem- until a clerk be appointed. Remuneration to be at the usual rate.”

The Board then adjourned till Wednesday the 80th inst. Meeting to be held in the Literary Institute at 7.30 p.m, * ,
