TEMUKA V. ASHBURTON.

! The first match between the clubs of | Ashhurton and Temuka' was played at Ashhurton on Saturday and resulted in a victory for the former by two tries to nil. The match was far from a pleasant one. Animal force is largely an element in football generally, but must not be mistaken for brute force, and the Ashhurton players should remember that there is a limit to it, and at auy rate not bring it to bear unfairly on their opponents, as* they did on this occasion by roughly handling their visitors when the hall was cried "held," and the holder overpowered by numbers. They should also learn to trust the umpires more, or else abandon the game. When one half of n club individually constitute themseivea umpires play becomes so cou fusing that those who practice fair play are at a loss to know what to do, or whoditr the umpire'is directing or not, and to this Ashhurton is largely indebted for its tiiec. This is the second time this season that the Ashhurton team has been unfavorably criticised. We trust that if they come to Temuka our local men wiil net them an example in fairness and couitesy. 1
