Efforts are being male- to avert a conflict between the Lords and Commons in connection with the franchise question. With this view Lord Wemyss will, in the House of Lords, on Monday, move a compromise, requiring that the Lords shall pass the Franchise Bill now, and the Government should introduce at the autumn session a Bill lor the redistribution of seats. Arrived— Waipa, from Port Chalmers; Candidate, from Napier ; Tautallon Castle, from Lyttelton ; Amazon, from Auckland ; James Wishart, from Lyttelton. The Bill which the Bank of South Australia has introduced into the Imperial Parliament for the . extension of its charter has passed the Committee of the House of Lords. The Imperial Treasury opposed the Bill on the grounds that it included a clause which limited the liability of shareholders with regard to note issue. Stormy scenes have taken place in both Houses respecting the overtures made by Mr Gladstone to Earl Cairns, which it is believed will certainly ensure a redistribution of seats next year. These disclosures are also considered to be likely to render the franchise question more acceptable at the autumn meeting of Parliament. July 13. The Rev. Chas. Strong, recently of Melbourne, has been appointed Professor of Latin to the Liverpool University College. July 14. Cornwall, the Secretary of the liish Post Office, has been arrested with a number of others, on charges of having committed unnatural crimes. In the House of Lords, the Earl of Salisbury opposed the motion brought forward by Lord Wemyss. The-death is announced of the Right Reverend P. Jacobson, Bishop of Chester, aged 81. Intelligence has been received that a number of Abyssinian chiefs are about to visit England for the purpose of bringing an elephant to the Queen as a present from Johannes. Serious rioting between Orangemen and Catholics has taken place in Cumberland. The fighting was very severe, and resulted in one man being shot and fifty wounded. The disturbance was only quelled by the intervention of a largo body of police. The discussion in the House of Lords on Lord Wemyss’ motion proposing a compromise on the franchise question has been postponed until Thursday.
In the House of Commons to-day, Lord Edmund Fitzraaurice, Undersecretary for Foreign Adairs, announced that intelligence has reached Government that General Gordon was still at Khartoum, and holding his own against the besiegers. The garrison had made constant sallies from the town with varying success.
A Land Agency Company, whose base of operations will be at Perth, Western Australia, is being formed, with a capital of 1,000,000.

The liquidators of the Oriental Bank will receive claims until Ncvemher 20tb. Earl Granville stated in the House of Lords that the Government would probably proceed with the re-dis*ribution of seats in November next, provided the Franchise Reform Bill was passed now. -July 15.
In the House of Lords last night, Earl Granville, in reply to a question, stated that he made an urgent appeal to France’s sense of the co-unity of nations, with reference to the convict question, and it was impossible for the British Government to do more. It has transpired that Government will support Lord Wemyss’ motion f> r arriving at a compromise on the subj-ct of the Franchise Bill.
The proposed exchange of the Falkland Islands for that of New Caledonia is considered improbable. Paris, July 12.
The cholera is spreading in Marseilles in an alarming manner, and the number of deaths is daily increasing. News is now to hand that the epidemic has appeared at Lyons,

A report has reached ht re that Osin n Digna has seized the town of lias Asseuse on the Red Sea, to the south of Trinkitat. Intelligence is to hand that Madir (the Egyptian Governor of Dongohi) has joined the rebel forco, and has announced his intention of unrobing on Wady Haifa. Alexandria, July 14. An outbreak of cholera has occurred here, but it has not at pr sent assumed alarming proportions. Later. Paternotre, the French Minister for China, with a view of arriving at an nmicnb’e settlement of the difficulty which has arisen in connection with the attack, on French troops at Langson, on the Totiqmn frontier.
