AUCTIONEERS’ REPORTS. GERALDINE. Messrs J. Mundell and Co. repoit sales for the week ending Saturday, stb July, 1884 : The stock market as yet remains quiet. We find an increasing demand for store cattle, whicn we believe will improve as the spring approaches. Sheep are dull of sale. Enquiries are being made for strong healthy lambs. At the Geraldine monthly sale on Wednesday last the entry was the smallest we have seen in these yards, but prices were realised'satisfactory to all concerned, every lot being cleared at considerably over owners’ reserve. The totals yarded were —84 sheep, 36 head of cattle, 24 pigs, 15 horses. The following prices were realised : —Lambs, three-quarter-bred, 9s ; cows, springing, £6 ; two-year-old steers, in low condition, £2 15s ; old cows, in forward condition, fetched £3 5s ; store pigs, 20s to 40s each. Ou account of a client we sold 10 horses, at prices ranging from 5s to £5. At Winchester Fair on Thursday the entry was small, and no business of any importance was transacted. We sold a small lot of fat sheep at 14s 9d. At our salerooms, Geraldine, on Saturday, there was a good attendance of buyers, and prices for farm produce slightly improved. For potatoes especially a good demand exists.
TIMi.RU. Messrs Maclean and Stewart report for the past week ending Saturday as follows : Horses —To-day’s entry was under the average, onlj about 30 draught and hacks coming forward for sale. They report the demand quiet, and prices are very unfavorable to sellers. Quotations for good draughts, £lB to £26 ; inferior, £U to £l6; hacks, £8 to £U, according to quality. At these prices they disposed of about one half the number yarded. Sheep -Prices for store sheep are much the same as last week, and no improvement in the demand is noted. At Washdyke last Tuesday, very little business was done, the class of store sheep—viz., crossbred ewes —for which there is any demand not bemg entered for sale. At Winchester on Thursday about 100 meymo anti crossbred shepp were penned, and the business done there also was very limited. They sold a line of hoggets at 10s Sd. Privately they have sold during the week 250 halt-bred ewes and a small line of merino ewe* at satisfactory prices.
Fat sheep—They have sold several lines of merino and crossbred wethers, the former up to 9s and the latter up to 14s 6d. Cattle —No lots of importance in store cattle are changing hands. > At their auction sales this class of stock has been poorly represented, and sales made are only a few odd lots. They placed a few steers and heifers at the Washdyke last Tuesday at from 30s to £3 10s ; calves from 12s to 15s. At Winchester last Thursday they placed a small pen of six 18-months' and 2-year-old heifers at £2 9s 6d. Fat cattle—Present rates are about 17s 6d per 1001 b. On Tuesday they sold at Washdyke Yards seven fat cows from £5 10s to £8 per head. pig S They have placed during the week 30 store pigs at from 12s for weaners to 275. .. , , Skins, Hides, &e. They held their usual fortnightly sale at their rooms last Wednesday, when a very full catalogue was offered. 1250 skins, 30 hides and a few sacks of wool being booked for sale. They have to report a fair attendance of the trade and good competition for the different lots, the whole of which were sold at the following prices : -Butchers green skins —crossbreds, full-wool ed, 3s 3d to 3s 6d ; merinos, 2s 6d to 3o 4d. Farmers’ lots when well saved crossbreds, 2s Id to 3s 3d ; merinos, 2s to 2s 3d ; pelts, from 4i to 6d. A few very heavy merino skins were sold as high as 4s 3d. Values of hides are from 3d to 4d. A few bags of mixed wool were sold at from 4d to per lb.
CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE The Corn Exchange report for the week ending Friday evening, the 4th inst:—
i The present week has not shown any great improvement in prices as far as the grain market is concerned. An enquiry for sound wheat still exists, and although no large transactions hare taken place, prices are well maintained, especially tor real good spot parcels. As regards oats there has been a better enquiry as compared with last week, but values remain about the same, there being nothing to alter prices. Good malting barley is still sought after, but for inferiorqualities there is little or no demand. Beans and peas have shown some activity, particularly the former, but the quality of both is so uncertain that not much business has resulted. Beally sound samples, however, could be sold readily. There is a medium demand for potatoes, bat those in store resdy for shipment command a slight advance before others. Butter and cheese are quiet, and very few transactions have taken place in either. The following quotations are the latest to date:—
Wheat—Prime samples of Tuscan, 3s 4d ; pearl, 3s 3d ; Hunter’s 3s Id and 3s 2d ; slightly damp seconds, 2s 3d and 2s 6d ; fowls’ wheat, Is 9d and 2s. Oats—Milling, 2s 3d ; short bright feed, 2s 2d and 2s 3d ; Tartars, for seed, 2s 3d ; Tartars, feed, 2s ; inferior sorts, Is 6d and Is lOd,
Barley— Prime malting, 4s ; fair to medium, 3s 3d and 3s 6d } feed, 2s and 2s 2d.
Peas —Prime Prussian Blues, 3s 3d and 8s 6d ; Black-eyed Susan or feed lots, 2s 9d and 3s.
Beans—2s 9d and Bs. Potatoes —2B s 80s at country stations within twelve miles. Butter and Cheese—7d to 8d for the former, and 4d to 5d for the latter. The quotations given above are paid to farmers delivering f.o.b. at Lyttelton, excepting barley and potatoes.
DUNEDIN MARKETS. Mr L. Maclean, under arrangements with the British and New Zealand Mortgage and Agency Company (Limited), reports for the week ended July 2 as follows Fat Cattle—2l2 head were yarded. Best bullocks brought from £8 to £11; medium, £5 to £7 ; beat cows, from £5 10s to £7 17s 6d, and one exceptional cow £9 2s 6d. I quote prime beef at 22s to 248 per lOOlba. Fat Sheep—l 729 were penned, about 400 of which were merinos. The quality throughout was fairly good. Quotations ; Best crossbreds brought from 15s to 17s 6d ; merinos, 7« 6d to 13s 9d. I quote prime mutton from 2£d to per lb. Pigs—l3l penned, and competition was somewhat easier. Best bacon pigs fetched up to 80s ; porkers, 25a to 85s; good stores, 20s. Store Cattle and Sheep—No transactions to report. Sheepskins—At my usual sale I submitted a large catalogue, and all the lots were well competed for. Green crossbreds brought from 2s 8d to 3s 4d ; do merino, 2s to 3s 2d ; dry skins, Is 8d to 2s lid.
Hides—During the week I hare cleared all lots to hand at late rates — viz., for henry salted, 4£d per lb ; medium, 3£d to 4d ; light, 3d ; calfskin, is to 2s 61 ; green hides, 16s to 20s each, according to weight and condition.
Grain —The local demand during the last week has been slightly better for prime milling samples, 1 quote prime Velvet and Tuscan at 3s lo 3s Sd ; medium, 2s Sd to 2s iQd ; fowl wheat, Is 6d to 2s 6d. Oats : Quotations remain unaltered—viz., bright milling, 2s Id to 2s 2d ; bright feed, 2s to 2s. Id ; medium, Is 9d to la I Oil, Barley : Prime malting, 4s to 4s 3d ; medium, 3s 6d to 3s 9d—bags weighed in.
ENGLISH MARKETS.
July 4, The tptal quantity of wheal afloat for Great Britain is 1,870,000 quarters, an increase of 10,000 quarters during the week. Adelaide wheat, ex store, remains at 40s, and New Zealand do 34s to 40s. Off coast cargoes of Adelaide wheat are quoted at 395; Adelaide flour, ex store, is at 18s.
Australian tallow, of average quality, beef 35s 6d, mutton 375. Prime New Zealand mutton is now quoted at s£d to ssd per lb. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Adelaidb, July 4, The wheat market is very depressed, and quotations have declined to 3s lid and 4s, aud 3s lOd for farmers’ lots. Town flour remains at £9 5s to £9 10s, and country brands at £8 5s to £8 10s.
