TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Temuka Road Board was held in the Board’s offices, Temuka, on Tuesday, Present—Messrs J. Talbot (Chairman), h. Smith, and R. A. Barker. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. '' ACCOUH TS. Accounts to the amount of £169 li lid were passed for payment. DEPUTATIONS. Mr A. M. Clark, as Manager of the Riverslea Estate, attended and stated that the canal near Greenaway’s was overflowing, through rubbish lying in it. He also asked for planking for • bridge over the canal, on Roileston’s road, to be granted to him, to tho value of about £3 10s.
The Surveyor was directed to -have the canal cleaned out, and to supply the planking asked for. Mr Deßenzy attended to-complain of the state of the road between Smithfield and Winchester bridge. It was decided to shingle tha road. Mr G. Lynch attended with a petition from a number of ratepayers, asking the Board to form Mauds and Alexander streets. The work was ordered to be done. Mr R. Lloyd interviewed the Board to ask for a portion of Cass street to be shingled.
The Board deferred the matter for information, as Cass street forms the north boundary between the Road District and the Temuka Town District.
CORRESPOND ENCI. . Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : From Mr M. Quinn, apologising foe non-attendance at the meeting, inconsequence of business at Dunedin* From the Commissioner of Property Tax, Wellington, stating that a new valuation roll, asked for by the Chairman of the Board, was in course ef preparation, and would be forwarded on Friday next. . From Mr J. C. Binskin, calling | attention to the state of the Main Road between Winchester and Orari, which are nearly impassable owing to mud holes.
Resolved—“ That Mr Binskin be informed the work was let last Board day, but as the contractor has failed to proceed with the work, it will again be let.”
From the Clerk to the Tern uka Town Board, asking for the loan of the valuation roll for a few days, as the Government do not supply rolls a to Town Boards. The application was granted. From Mr John Gilliatt, asking the Board to lower the culvert by Thomson’s slaughter yards. The surveyor was instructed to inspect the place and attend to the same if required*
From Mr XJprichard, stating that having sold sections 470 and 472 to Mr Wyatt, h« wonld be glad if Mr Wyatt’s name was inserted on the rate roll in respect to such land. This was ordered to be attended to. From the District Survey Office, Christchurch, advising that Mr Wadsworth, owner of lot 49 in reserve 1371, has applied for a strip of land 50 links wida to be reserved along the N.E. boundary of lot 50 for the purpose of getting a water supply from the creek. Before doing so the Survey Office would he glad if the Hoad Board would allow their Surveyor to report as to the desirability of the reservation. The Surveyor was requested to furnish the necessary report. From Mrs J. Johnson, stating that her cattle are in danger of being bogged through the Board blocking up the outlet of the spring in her paddock. The letter to be acknowledged, and Mrs Johnson informed that the Board do not admit having done anything that they have not a right to do. From Mr M. Moore, asking for a few drain pipes for the approach to his house. Resolved—That the request cannot be entertained,” From Mr (ieorge Taylor, asking for the amount of the valuation of his house and shop, lately destroyed by fire, to be struck off the valuation roll. Resolved—‘f That Mr Taylor be informed that the Board would prefer not to alter the valuation, but think the case would be met by the Board remitting a fair proportion of the rates for such period ss the premises remain unbuilt.” From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Christchurch, asking for certain information to be supplied him to enable a return to be forwarded to the Secretary for Crown Lands of all lands set apart in the Provincial District of Canterbury tor plantation reserves or native the quantity of land planted, and to what purpose the remainder has been applied, etc. - From the Clerk to the Terauka Town Board, asking the Road Board to fix a day to receive a deputation from the Town Board to arrange financial and ether matters between the two Boards. Resolved —“ That a special meeting
of tha Board be held on the 16th inst., for the purpose of going into the matters.”
From the Receiver of Land Revenue, Christchurch, informing the Board, in reply to a letter, that Reserve No. 819 was occupied by Mr J. A. Young. From Mr J. T. M. Hayhurst, forwarding copies of correspondence between the Receiver ■of Land Revenue
and himself, in reference to exchanging gravel reserve No. 1067, Temuka, for private land, either at Milford or Winchester. It was resolved—“ That Mr Hayhurst s offer t© exchange gravel pits be accepted, and that-Mr Dyson hi requested to value the land to be given in exchange, as well as the reserve Mr Hayhurst wishes to obtain j the sites offered to be subject to test and approval.” From Mr Wm. Palmer declining to pay, at present, a portion of the cost of cutting a drain on the east side of Penny’s road. sijrvbybr’s report. The Surveyor’s report for the month ended June 30th was then read as follows “ The late frost and rain have, with the traffic, cot up the roads a good deal. The road .to Geraldine requires shingling at once, as in some places it is quite bare. The road past Mr Talbot’s requires about 150 yards of shingle. The work of repairing the road near the Rangitata has not been - finished, owing to the weather, but will be done mb soon as possible. There are some places on the Mam Road above Winchester that have not been done. Tenders might be called at once for this ; about ten chains require doing badly. The cutting near Mr Bisset’s, Orari, I would recommend to be done. I da not think the river would injure • it. It would cost about £— to make it passable. The poisoned wheat from Mr Brooks, has come to hand and part of it distributed. Tenders have been called for contracts, which are for your consideration to-day. A number of defaulting ratepayers have been summoned, bat no case has been allowed ■ to come to Court, as the money in each case has been paid. Another lot will be issued as soon as possible.—P. £>ixCLA.IR, Surveyor.” The following resolutions were passed on the report;— “That tenders be called for repairs to Main Road above Winchester.” “ That the cutting near Bisset’s be done, and the ruts on the road thereto bo filled up.”
MISCELLANEOUS. The following resolutions were also DftSSGu * ■ “ That the Chairman be authorised to advertise for applications for the post of working Overseer to the Board, at a salary of £l2O per annum, with frae house ; also for applications for doing the clerical work, at a salary of £3O per annum ; applications to be cent in by the first Tuesday in August. ■ That a special meeting of the Board be held on the 16th inst., and that at that meeting a rate of -|d in the £ be struck on all rateable property in the district, and that the necessary forms be carried out,” TENDERS, The following tenders were accepted : .Contract No. 4—E.
