As the southern express was passing Mosgiel on Wednesday evening it struck a man on horseback who attempted to cross in front ol it. The horse was thrown clear of the line, and the man, after some search, was found on the cowcatcher of the engine. He proved to be Alexander Todd. Dr McCaw, of Mosgiel, the brother-in-law of the injured man, was quickly in attendance, and Todd soon recovered censciousness. He lingered till mid-day on Thursday, and then died. His horse was so badly mangled that it had to be killed. Mr Todd was about thirty years of age and unmarried,

Last Thursday night the Auckland police arrested a man named Dewson in his house, on a charge of brutality. He had his son, a lad of 15, bound by ropes to the ceiling and was flogging him with another rope. The' boy had been fearfully ill-used, and was taken to the police station for protection. Mr Wm. Pickett, a sharebroker, at Auckland, committed suicide at his lodgings last Wednesday night. He had locked himself in his bedroom, undressed and shot himself through the heart with n charge from a double-barrelled gun. A few minutes before, Mrs Griffiths, the landlady, heard him say in his bedroom that the men were after him. He had been out on the previous night, but returned to his lodgings that night.
