PUBLIC MEETING.

On Tuesday afternoon last a public meeting of ratepayers wa» held in th« Road Board Office, Geraldine, to consider the advisability, or otherwise, of closing certain roar's, th« same having been duly advertised under 'The Public Works Act.' There were only three or four ratepayers present besides the members of the Board, Mr W", U. Slack presiding. The Chairman rend the advertisement from the Geraldinb Guakdian convening the meeting.

The Overseer' also read the advertiseraent inserted in the same paper enumerating the roads proposed to be clos'd ; also descriptions of same. The first road dealt with was that in Beautiful Valley, bounded by K.S. U,UO, 24,405 and 33,991. it rod deviation and exchange.

Proposed by Mr Lewis, stcouded by" Mr Deltenzy and carried—' That the road be abolished.'

Mr Lewi* objected to the road bouud<«d by R.S. 27,797, lots 14, 29, 30, R.S. 389 on the Orari Fki being closed. He asked who authorised the calliag of the meeting to hare the roads shut. vfi§ The Chairman replied that the Board did.

Mr Lowis said it was a serious thing to do. If the people bought land, and a road to it was afterwards closed it

depreciated the value of such land, and it would not benefit the Board. If it were a benefit to the Board he would not say so much about it. The Chairman read a part of the Public Works Act relating to the stoppage of roadß. Proposed by Mr Kellacd, seconded bj Mr "Webb and canied —« That the road be closed.' There being no opposition to the other propositions of the Board, the remaining roads as advertised were declared. The Chairman intimated that the actual closing of the roads did not rest with the Board. It would have to coma before the Geraldine County County Council, whose decision would bi final. The meeting then terminated.
