In ite issue this morning, the Daily News publishes an article on the New Guinea annexation, in the course of which it etates that the Government recently sounded one of the Anstra lian colonies regarding its readiness to contribute towards expenses in connection with the proposed establishment of British authorities at certain points on the co»st of New Guinea. It states, however, that it is not likely that the Australian colonies will rote money on such terms as would be acceptable to the Imperial Governmeut, and it consider! that an early exercise of British ! sovereignity in New Guinea is not expected. A serious railway accident occurred lasteveningnear Salisbury, A passenger train left the rails and fell into the river AvOd, causing the death of five passengers. Thirty others sustained severe injuries. The death is announced of Lord Claud Hamilton, aged 71. 'J'elegrams from Souakim state that the attacks by Arab rebels upon the outposts at Souakim hare been renewed with great vigor, and that a skirmish occurred, in which the Arabs were repulsed with heavy loss. An Anglo-Russian Commission is about to be appointed to settle the demarcation of the northern frontier of Afghanistan, A disastrous fire occurred to-day in Shored itch, resulting in the total destruction of a menagerie and all the animals contained in it.
A number of members of the liberal party have warned Mr Gladstone that should he surrender the control of Egyptian affairs to the European Powers they will decline to support his GoTernment.

Tawhaio and hi§ fellow chiefe intend to raise the question of the legality of the New Zealand Laod Corporation, if they can, while in England. They propose l*aving on their return to the colony in August.
