LICENSING COMMITTEES.
TEMUKA. Th* annual meeting of the Temuka Licensing Committee was held last Thursday. Present—Messrs S. D. Barker (Chairman), W. Stewart, J. Paterson and J. Meyer.
The police reported favorably of all the houses in the district.
A question arose as to the hour the licenses were to be granted to.
Mr Wills said that all the town hotels desired to have 11 o'clock licenses, and all the country hotels 10 o'clock licenses.
Constable Morton stated they ought to have applied for the licenses in that form. He wished to see the applications for 11 o'clock licenses. Mr Wills said at the licenses were for 11 o'clock last year, there was no necessity for applying for 11 o'clock licenses. They should be granted as a matter of course. The Act did not state that it was necessary to make a special application for 11 o'clock licenses, After some further conversation on the subject, the Chairman intimated that it would be desirable that the hotelkcopers should make application for 11 o'clock licenses.
Only one or two of the hotelkecpers were present, so messengers were speedily despatched to the absent ones, and in a few minutes they appeared and applied for 11 o'clock licenses, which wsre granted. The license of the Spur Hut Hotel was transferred from Mr A. 0. Gil more to Mr Gleeson ; of the Winchester Hotel from her late husband to Mrs Swinton ; and of the Crown Hotel, Temuka, from Mr A. R. Kirk to Petei Bertie.
Mr Wills brought under the notice of the Court the matter of the Town Board, of Temuka, to which the license f?es should be paid in future.
RAUKAPUKA, Th« annual meeting of 'he Raukapuka Licensing Committee was yesterday. Present—Messrs W. U. Slack (Chairman), L. Walker and Dr Fish. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The report of the police on the hotels within the jurisdict'on of the Committee was raad. The licenses of Robjrt Taylor, of the Geraldine Hotel, mid Mr Richard C. Bowden, of the Crown Hotel, Geraldine, were renewed. Mr T. Farrell applied for a renewal of the Bush Hotel license, The applicant being unavoidably absent, Mr A. Fisher appeared on his behalf. The police report stated that the alterations to the hotel were partly unfinished. Constable Willonghby stated that the property had lately changed ownership. The part of thy hotel unfinished was the new upstairs bedrooms, which had not been required by the Committee to be added to the accommodation.
Mr D. Mcllwr.-iith, th» now proprietor of the hotel, stated that bo was using his utmost endeavors to gat the hotel thoroughly flnished. —The license was granted. Mr J. H. Clayton applied for a renewal of tins license of the Star of the South Hotel, Gernldine, which was granted. In regard to the Raugitata Hotel, the police report stated that it was in bad repair, and the furniture delapitatr.l. Constable Willougbby stated that siace that report had been made, the owner, Mr Watkins, was doing his utmost to bring it back to its former good condition, and was making extensive repairs at considerable outlay. Dr Foster asked the Committee to give Mr Watkins authority to carry on the license of the hotel until their next sitting. Mr Watkins, who was present, yaid it was his inlention either to put a good man and his wife, from the Stud holme Hotel, into the hotel in, question, or he might go into it himself.
On th's understanding tho Committee granted Dr Foster's application. Mr William Wad low applied for a renewal of the license of the Woodbury Hotel, at Woodbury.—Granted. Mr T. Tindall, of the Hiltou Hotei, «p----plied for a lenewal of his license. —Granted. The applicant requested that the license fee might be reduced from £7 10s to £5. Those of the Star of the South, RangiUta and ' Woodbury hotels were reduced last year, and ho was unavoidably absent at that time otherwise he would then have made a similar application as the proprietors of those hotels had done. The Committee reduced the fee to MB. Applications for transfers of licenses of the Crown Hotei from Mr Richard C. Bowden to Mr Thomas Farrell, and of the Bush Hotel from Mr Thomas Farrell to Mr Daniel Mel! wraith, weie adjourned for consideration till Monday, June 30th, on which date the Committee will hold _a special sitting to hear an application in regard to the transfer of the license of ths Ranjrilata Hotei. Mr A. Fisher appeared for Mr T. Farrell in botli the above applications. The Clerk, Mr C. E. Sherratt, intimated that the adjournment was necessary, as owing to tho shortness ef lime in which tho applications had heeu made, the Committee could not at the present sitting grr.nt a permanent transfer of the licenses. The meeting.adjourned accordingly.
