BIRTHDAY LINES.

To Our ‘ Genial Host’ at Winchester.

In looking back through bygone years, what changes meet the view, Since you and I, dear J. A. Y., first came to Timaru. The ‘bony reaper’s’ been at work, end got a tidy budget in. Days, as they go, but seem to show how tempus is a fugiting. Those who were once so young and fair they are not quit* the s;.m* now, The * rheumatis ’ and ‘ thousand ills’ have changed their little game now, All must grew old, and weak and cold, but thou alone art clever, Though others change, it’s very etrange, thou’rt Young, Young still as ever.

We like old port—old port is always dearest — Old fiddles play the best, the eweetest, clearest; Old coins— just speak to Haast, of the museum ; Old books, how men gloat on them—when they see ’em, Thus age gives value, but it must be said Eternal youth shall blossom round ihy head. While all things old, may have their praises sung, We’re bound to sing of thee, as aver Young. Immortal youngster, thou canst ne’er grow old, Thy eye can ne’er grow dim, thy blood run cold. Age cannot touch thee, ’tis a vain endeavor, Since thou must rise each day as Young as ever. We’d like to learn your secret, with what dubbing— What ‘ Elixir of life ’—your limbs you’re rubbing. Then might we—care and sorrow from us flingjust moult, and be like thee, for ever Young. J.T.M. Timaru,
